A Widow’s Game is strongest when Ivana Baquero is on screen; its shifting viewpoints and abrupt wrap-up make the mystery less satisfying. The Netflix thriller is inspired by a real 2017 case in Valencia, but it is a dramatization, not a documentary account.
What is A Widow’s Game about?
Netflix describes the film as a thriller based on real events. Its synopsis sets up a murder investigation that exposes a widow’s hidden life. Baquero plays Maje, whose husband, Arturo Ferrer Puig, is found dead; Carmen Machi and Tristán Ulloa are also among the listed cast. Carlos Sedes directed the film.
Netflix lists the runtime as 2 hours 2 minutes and categorizes the title among Spanish drama, thriller and mystery films. Its title page also lists streaming and offline downloads; those options can vary by region and over time.
Is A Widow’s Game based on a true story?
Yes, in the sense that Netflix says it is inspired by the 2017 Patraix case in Valencia, Spain. The real people named in Netflix’s account are María Jesús Moreno, her husband Antonio Navarro and Salvador Rodrigo. The film uses fictionalized character names: Maje, Arturo Ferrer Puig and Salva.

The available sources here do not establish the case’s court outcome or subsequent legal developments, so the film should not be treated as a substitute for a factual case history.
Ivana Baquero’s performance is the film’s strongest asset
Baquero gives Maje a convincing split between the image she presents to others and her private behavior. That contrast supplies much of the film’s tension: the character’s outward composure becomes part of the mystery rather than simply a clue to solve it. The ensemble, including Machi and Ulloa, helps sustain the drama even when the story’s construction falters.
Why the mystery feels underwhelming
The film moves among detective Eva, Maje and Salva. In this review, those perspective shifts interrupt the investigation’s momentum instead of steadily sharpening it. Each change of viewpoint offers another angle on the story, but the transitions make it harder for the mystery to build a single, sustained line of suspense.
The resolution then arrives abruptly, leaving the preceding perspectives feeling less fully integrated than they might have been. The material could, in this reviewer’s view, have benefited from a limited-series format, with more room to develop the investigation and its characters. That is a judgment about the adaptation’s pacing, not a claim that the real case followed the film’s structure.

Watch for Baquero’s layered performance and the cast; temper expectations if you want a tightly focused whodunnit. A Widow’s Game has a compelling real-case premise, but its three-perspective approach and hurried finish weaken the mystery it sets out to tell.
