On productions covered by SAG-AFTRA contracts, sex acts are simulated: the union prohibits actual sex acts, including genital contact without a physical barrier. That rule does not establish what happens on every film production worldwide. Nudity or a convincing performance, by itself, is not evidence that performers had actual sex.

What “simulated sex” means

A sex scene is a performance created for the camera. On SAG-AFTRA signatory productions, the union defines actual sex to include genital contact without a physical barrier, whether a performer is clothed or unclothed, and prohibits actual sex acts under its contracts. The rule’s scope is those covered productions; it should not be generalized to every country, independent film, or non-union production. Read the SAG-AFTRA Quick Guide for Scenes Involving Nudity and Simulated Sex.

Nudity and sexual activity are not the same thing. A scene may show nudity while the performers simulate the act, and camera framing, editing, modesty garments, barriers, prosthetics, or body and digital doubles can contribute to what appears on screen. Which techniques were used depends on the production; do not infer them from the finished scene alone.

How a realistic sex scene is staged

Agreeing on what will be shown

For SAG-AFTRA-covered productions, performers receive notice and give prior written consent for nudity or simulated sex. A rider describes the agreed performance and how it may be depicted. SAG-AFTRA’s guide says riders generally must be provided at least 48 hours before the scene’s call time, with limited exceptions. A performer may withdraw written consent before footage is captured, and the final depiction must reflect the rider.

Choreography and camera work

Directors and performers can plan the scene’s movements, positions, timing, and framing, then rehearse and block them for the camera. The choreography can make a staged moment look intimate or spontaneous without the actors performing actual sex. On covered productions, body or digital doubling is subject to prior consent and applicable terms.

What an intimacy coordinator does

An intimacy coordinator can help communicate boundaries, confirm consent, and plan the scene’s choreography. SAG-AFTRA standards describe coordinators working with writers, directors, and performers before filming; coordinating with departments on barriers and prosthetics; reviewing riders and closed-set practices; and potentially supporting the production after filming, including checking a final cut against riders. Their presence is a support for the work, not evidence that performers are having actual sex. See SAG-AFTRA’s Standards and Protocols for the Use of Intimacy Coordinators.

What protections apply on SAG-AFTRA productions?

The union’s quick guide covers signatory film and television productions under its contracts. Among its provisions are prior written consent and riders for nudity or simulated sex; limits on set and monitor access to people essential to the scene; a ban on personal-device recording; and cover-ups for performers when they are not rehearsing or filming. Producers must also comply with applicable local, state, and federal law.

Agreement-specific protections can differ by role. A SAG-AFTRA FAQ published and updated May 15, 2026, says stand-ins may not be required to work nude or simulate sex acts. It also says producers will use best efforts to engage an intimacy coordinator when background actors perform nudity or simulated sex, and background actors may request access to an engaged coordinator. These provisions concern the relevant agreement, not the entire global film industry. See SAG-AFTRA’s 2026 TV/Theatrical Agreement FAQ.

A documented example: How to Have Sex

In a January 4, 2024, TIME interview, director Molly Manning Walker described the intimate scenes in How to Have Sex as carefully planned: she storyboarded them by hand, made photographs, and choreographed them with intimacy coordinator Jenefer Odell. Walker said they rehearsed a beach scene in a hotel before blocking it on location, and that the actors had input on how it should work. She summed up the preparation this way: “Those scenes were probably the most planned out of the film.”

That is one director’s account of one production, not a universal description of how films are made. It does illustrate why a scene can feel realistic even when its movements and camera presentation have been deliberately constructed.

Can you tell from watching whether a scene is real?

Usually, the image alone cannot establish what performers did physically. Visible skin, apparent movement, a convincing reaction, or a realistic-looking scene does not prove that actual sex occurred. For a specific production, a reliable production-specific account is needed; the sources cited here do not establish an example of an unsimulated sex scene.

There is also no reliable worldwide statistic in the sources cited here for how often films use actual sex, how often intimacy coordinators are employed, or how many scenes are made under union protections. The answer depends on the production and the rules that apply to it. Scenes depicting sexual assault or coercion may also be staged and choreographed; the on-screen story should not be confused with the performers’ real-world consent.
