MJF returned to AEW on December 17, 2025, and used a personal jab at Swerve Strickland—including a comparison to Sean “P. Diddy” Combs—while inserting himself into the Worlds End championship match. A January 2026 report said some people within AEW were unhappy with the Diddy line, but did not identify them or establish a company-wide response.
What happened during MJF’s AEW return?
MJF returned on the December 17, 2025, Holiday Bash episode of AEW Dynamite in Manchester, England. He interrupted a contract signing for a planned three-way AEW World Championship match and presented the Casino Gauntlet contract he had earned at All In. That made the Worlds End match a four-way against champion Samoa Joe, Hangman Adam Page, and Swerve Strickland. AEW’s official recap places the return after MJF’s loss to Mark Briscoe at All Out in September.
MJF framed the move as a chance to beat Page and two rivals in one match, while pursuing the championship he had lost to Joe. The return segment therefore served a clear storyline purpose: it put MJF back into the title picture and set up a four-way rather than merely delivering a provocative line.
What did MJF say about Diddy?
Addressing Strickland, MJF said he reminded him of a famous musician and listed supposed similarities before naming P. Diddy. AEW’s recap transcribes the line as: “You really remind me a lot of this famous musician. You have a lot in common. You both call yourself moguls. You both rock chains. You both used too much baby oil. And you’re both dogshit rappers. Oh, that’s right, P. Diddy!”

This was a scripted, in-character wrestling insult, not a factual equivalence between Strickland and Combs. The claims about chains, baby oil, and rapping are part of MJF’s taunt, not independent biographical findings. AEW’s transcript of the segment is the primary record of what he said.
Why did MJF bring up WWE?
MJF also mocked Strickland for having “went over to WWE,” then immediately acknowledged, “Hey, Hey, it’s a perfectly good company.” He used the reference as part of their fictional rivalry and invoked their earlier time on the independent wrestling circuit. The remark was not an argument that WWE was a bad company; MJF explicitly softened the jab in the same promo. AEW’s recap records both lines.

Why were some people in AEW reportedly unhappy?
On January 9, 2026, Wrestling Inc. reported that some people within AEW were unhappy with the Diddy reference. Its account attributed the report of discontent to Fightful Select and said Fightful confirmed a Wrestling Observer Live report that other talent had not known about the line beforehand.
The people described were not named, and the report did not include an on-record AEW statement. It supports saying that unnamed people were reportedly unhappy and that some talent reportedly lacked advance notice; it does not establish that the whole locker room objected, that AEW disciplined MJF, or that the company had issued a formal response.

What happened after the return?
MJF went on to win the AEW World Championship match at Worlds End on December 27, 2025, according to the Wrestling Inc. report. That result was the follow-up to the title-story stakes introduced during his return, not part of the December 17 segment itself.
