Rather than recounting the actor’s private life, French filmmaker Cédric Dupire re-edits his screen performances into a parallel life story of Bachchan as a recurring character. The film screened at MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in October 2024, but that past screening does not establish where it can be watched now.
What is The Real Superstar about?
Dupire’s film treats Bachchan’s roles across different movies as parts of one evolving screen persona. The Festival des 3 Continents describes a re-editing of a large collection of excerpts featuring Bachchan, without commentary; Scroll reports that Dupire and co-editor Charlotte Tourrès selected scenes across the actor’s filmography to shape a fictional hero’s life. The resulting portrait is not a factual account of events in Bachchan’s life.
Dupire put the distinction plainly to Scroll: “My film isn’t about Bachchan’s real life but his destiny as a character.” The festival catalogue describes the work as “the anatomy of an icon as it appeared to us on screen,” in text attributed to Jérôme Baron. How does the montage create a life story?
Scenes from separate films are arranged into a progression resembling a biography: birth, childhood, adulthood, a sense of purpose, messiah-like status, and victory or death. Scroll describes the construction as using familiar cinematic devices including montages, mirrors, recurring dialogue, and echoes between narratives. These stages belong to the composite film character Dupire creates; they are not claims about the actor’s real biography.

The approach also asks what it means to inhabit so many changing roles. Dupire told Scroll: “I imagined what would be the life of someone who is always changing roles. What must be going on in his head?” The film’s argument is made through the juxtaposition and recurrence of performances, rather than through interviews or explanatory narration.
Why does the film connect Bachchan’s roles with his audience?
Dupire’s interpretation extends beyond the screen to the emotional bond audiences form with Bachchan’s persona. Discussing public concern after Bachchan’s near-fatal injury while filming Coolie in 1983, he told Scroll, “People dream through Bachchan, through his body.” This is the filmmaker’s reading of the relationship between star and audience, not a measured finding about public opinion.
