The claim appears in the 2024 Netflix documentary The Menendez Brothers, as quoted in a report by KC Baker. The available sources do not independently confirm the strike or establish when it happened or how long it lasted.
What did Lyle say about Erik’s hunger strike?
In KC Baker’s report about The Menendez Brothers, Lyle says: “My brother actually went on a hunger strike to try to keep us together.” Baker describes Lyle discussing the brothers’ efforts not to be separated after their 1996 convictions.
The explanation Lyle gives is that Erik was trying to prevent the brothers from being kept apart in prison. The statement is Lyle’s account, quoted in reporting about the documentary—not a finding established by prison records in the sources available here.
Where does the account appear?
The statement was reported in connection with Netflix’s documentary The Menendez Brothers, listed for U.S. release on Oct. 7, 2024. Netflix describes the film as drawing on audio interviews with Lyle and Erik, lawyers involved in the trial, journalists, jurors, family members, and other observers.

#1 Best Overall
Netflix’s companion interview page identifies Alejandro Hartmann as the film’s director and presents the brothers speaking from prison about their case. That page provides documentary context; it does not independently verify the hunger-strike account.
What is—and is not—confirmed?
The sources establish that Lyle made the claim and that he attributed Erik’s action to an effort to keep them together. They do not provide the strike’s dates or duration, describe medical consequences, or cite prison documentation or an official response. Those details should not be inferred from the quotation.

In an explainer published Aug. 25, 2025, Netflix reported that both brothers had been denied parole at hearings that month and would next be eligible in three years. That is a dated snapshot, not confirmation of their current custody or parole status.
