That identity is revealed in the film’s setup and marketing, not saved as its final surprise. Director M. Night Shyamalan says the more unusual twist is that viewers find themselves identifying with Cooper. A later reveal adds a family betrayal: his wife, Rachel, helped direct authorities toward him.
What is the twist in Trap?
Trap works on two levels. The first is the thriller’s premise: Cooper Abbott (Josh Hartnett) realizes that a concert he is attending with his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) is a law-enforcement sting aimed at catching the Butcher—and he is the Butcher. The second is the perspective the film asks the audience to adopt: rather than waiting to learn whether Cooper is guilty, viewers follow a killer trying to avoid capture while keeping his daughter safe.

Shyamalan said he did not consider the killer’s identity the hidden twist. In an interview with SlashFilm published August 2, 2024, he described the unusual effect this way: “So that’s actually the funky twist of it, is not the information, that he’s in a trap or that he’s the killer — it’s that you are the killer.” His point is about identification with the character, not a literal claim that the audience shares Cooper’s guilt.
Why is Cooper at the concert?
Cooper takes Riley to see pop star Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan). He notices unusually heavy security, then learns that the authorities have organized the event as a trap for the Butcher. The audience knows Cooper’s identity as he weighs how to avoid suspicion and protect his daughter. Netflix Tudum’s March 11, 2025 film overview describes the concert surveillance and Cooper’s attempt to stay under suspicion’s radar.

That dramatic setup shifts the central question from “Who is the killer?” to “Can Cooper get out without being caught—and what will his daughter understand about him?” It is the source of the film’s tension and of Shyamalan’s audience-perspective twist.
What does Rachel’s reveal change?
Late-film spoiler: Cooper’s wife, Rachel (Alison Pill), has helped direct the authorities’ attention toward him. This is a separate plot reveal from Cooper’s identity: the killer is established early, while Rachel’s role adds a betrayal within his family. Variety’s August 5, 2024 breakdown discusses the film’s twists and ending.

Is Trap based on a true story?
No—not as a direct adaptation. The premise was partly inspired by Operation Flagship, a real 1985 sting by the U.S. Marshals Service and Washington, DC police. In its historical account, the Marshals Service says invitations went to more than 3,000 wanted people and about 100 were arrested when they arrived to collect purported football tickets. The account also says the invitees had more than 5,000 outstanding warrants; that warrant count is not the number of people invited.
Those figures describe the historical operation, not the film or the prevalence of serial crime. Trap relocates the basic sting idea to a pop concert and builds a fictional story around Cooper and his family.
Where can you watch or own Trap?
Availability depends on country and date. Netflix reported US streaming availability in March 2025, but that dated statement does not establish the current catalog. Hulu has a title listing, and a regional Prime Video page displays digital options; neither page proves that the same offer is available in every territory. Check the service listings for your location before subscribing, renting, or buying.
For physical media, Warner Bros. Japan announced Blu-ray and DVD sales and rentals beginning February 26, 2025, with digital sale and rental also offered. Its December 19, 2024 release notice gives a 105-minute runtime. This is Japanese-release information; it does not establish current stock, package details, or compatibility in other regions.
