Before American Idol announced its Top 14, Emmy Russell said she was ready for the possibility of being sent home. She told PEOPLE that performing her original song “Skinny”—a song she believed in and felt represented her—gave her peace whatever the result. The April 15, 2024 episode ended with Russell advancing.
What did Emmy Russell mean by “preparing for the no”?
In a PEOPLE interview published April 16, 2024, after the previous night’s episode, Russell described anticipating that she might not advance. “So I was preparing for the no, but I knew that I’d walk away with a song that I believed in and felt like me, so I was really peaceful,” she said. The comment was her own reflection on how she approached the results; it does not mean she knew what the judges or audience would decide.

Why did “Skinny” matter to her?
Russell performed “Skinny,” an original song she had also performed at her audition. The interview connects the song with her personal experience and creative expression. Her explanation was that she could leave the competition having shared work she believed in, regardless of whether she continued.
In the same interview, Russell described her longer-term aim: “I just want to keep on creating truthful art. I just want to keep on writing, and whether that’s singing the song or singing it and writing for other people, I want to do this.”

Did Emmy Russell advance to the Top 14?
Yes. The report says Russell advanced to American Idol’s Top 14 after the April 15, 2024 episode. Her remarks about “preparing for the no” were made ahead of that result, so the Top 14 outcome is a historical competition result, not a current-season update.
