Lulu Roman, the comedian and singer best known as a longtime regular on the country variety show Hee Haw, died in Bellingham, Washington, on April 23, 2025. She was 78. Born Bertha Louise Hable, Roman also built a career in gospel music and published an autobiography.
Who was Lulu Roman?
Roman was born Bertha Louise Hable in Dallas, Texas, on May 6, 1946. She became known to television audiences as a comedian on Hee Haw, while her work as a singer later included country and gospel recordings. MusicRow reported that she recorded more than a dozen albums.
Her 2019 autobiography, This Is My Story; This Is My Song, told her life story. The Television Academy’s biography records her birth details and career on the series.
What was Lulu Roman known for on Hee Haw?
Roman joined Hee Haw in 1969 with the endorsement of country singer Buck Owens, according to MusicRow. The Television Academy records that she appeared in the program’s first episode in 1969 and its last in 1992, marking a long association with the country variety show.

She also appeared in the spin-off Hee Haw Honeys and had guest roles on The Love Boat and Touched by an Angel, MusicRow reported.
How did her gospel music career develop?
Roman later turned toward gospel music after recovering and converting to Christianity, MusicRow reported. Her albums included You Were There, Take Me There and At Last, released in 2013.

The Gospel Music Association’s awards record lists one Dove Award win for Roman: the 1985 Best Album by a Secular Artist award for “You” Were Loving Me,” produced by Gary McSpadden. The association also lists her as a nominee for Country Album of the Year in 1992 and 2002; those nominations were not wins. Roman died in Bellingham, Washington, on April 23, 2025, at age 78. The Television Academy and the Woodfin Funeral Chapel obituary listing give April 23 as the date. MusicRow’s initial April 24 report instead said she died on April 22; later reporting and the funeral-home listing support April 23.

A cause of death was not established in the contemporaneous coverage. The Independent reported on April 24, 2025, that it had not yet been determined; no later official cause is established by the sources cited here.

Country and bluegrass singer Ricky Skaggs told the Los Angeles Times, “Lulu Roman has been a dear friend for over 40 years.” Singer Lee Greenwood, known for “God Bless the U.S.A.,” said, “I loved her joyful attitude.”
