Russell reached the Top 8 during American Idol season 22. In the April 28, 2024 episode, she performed “All The Small Things,” and the show’s results placed her among the contestants moving forward. KAYKO and Mia Matthews were eliminated that night, according to ABC’s recap.

Russell chose blink-182’s pop-punk hit for the April 28 performance round. She also joined Jack Blocker for a group performance of Lionel Richie’s “Hello,” as noted in the official episode recap.

April 29: “Coal Miner’s Daughter”
The following night, judge Katy Perry selected Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter” for Russell. ABC News described Russell’s rendition as a stripped-down piano arrangement. Russell said she wanted to sing from the heart, calling the song especially close to her because it was her grandmother’s. In the same episode, McKenna Faith Breinholt was saved and Kaibrienne left the competition, according to ABC’s recap.
Russell’s audition and her connection to Loretta Lynn
Russell is the daughter of Patsy Lynn and Philip Russell, and Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter. She auditioned before Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan with her original song “Skinny,” which she said was about an eating disorder. All three judges voted yes, advancing her to Hollywood Week. ABC News covered the audition and family background in its February 26, 2024 report.

Her early rounds also included Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” on April 21, during the Top 14-to-Top 12 round. ABC’s recap of that episode provides the preceding step in her run toward the Top 8.

Russell did not win season 22. Abi Carter took the title at the May 19, 2024 finale, recapped by ABC on May 20. Russell returned for the finale as Wynonna Judd’s duet partner, performing “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “No One Else on Earth.” The official finale recap confirms both Carter’s win and Russell’s appearance.
