The familiar November challenge—to draft a 50,000-word novel in 30 days—did not disappear, however: independent groups and resource hubs continue to support writers. The closure followed financial and organizational pressures and reputational damage; the available reporting does not show that criticism of NaNoWriMo’s AI statement alone caused it.
What closed—and what is still happening?
NaNoWriMo began informally in 1999 and became a nonprofit in 2006, according to The Guardian. The nonprofit announced in March 2025 that it would close. That ended the organization, not the basic writing challenge: independent communities and resources still invite writers to set a November drafting goal.
The classic format is 50,000 words of fiction during November—about 1,667 words per day. NaNoWriMo.ca, which says it is unaffiliated with the former nonprofit, describes the goal and presents itself as a resource center for writers: NaNoWriMo.ca’s About/What Happened? page.
The community once had considerable reach: Euronews reported 413,295 participants in the 2022 edition. That is a historical figure, not a current membership count or a count of participants in 2025. Euronews reported the figure in its April 3, 2025 coverage.

Why did the nonprofit shut down?
The organization’s explanation emphasized longstanding financial and participation problems. Publishers Weekly reported that interim executive director Kilby Blades cited “a six-year downward trend in participation” and described closure as “a logical outcome of longstanding circumstances, not a salacious tale of scandal.” Publishers Weekly’s April 2, 2025 report attributes those statements to Blades.
The Guardian reported that ongoing financial problems were compounded by reputational damage. NaNoWriMo spokesperson Kilby also told TechCrunch, “To blame NaNoWriMo’s demise on the events of the last year does a disservice to all struggling nonprofits,” according to TechCrunch’s April 1, 2025 coverage. Taken together, the reporting points to several pressures rather than establishing that one controversy caused the closure.

What was the AI controversy?
In 2024, the nonprofit tried to frame its position on artificial intelligence in creative writing as neutral and inclusive. The Guardian reported that its statement said it did not support or explicitly condemn any writing approach, including AI, and that “the categorical condemnation of artificial intelligence” had “classist and ableist undertones.”
Critics objected to that framing, arguing that it treated opposition to generative AI as discriminatory and failed to address concerns about creative labor and the material used to train AI systems. Publishers Weekly reported that the organization later amended its position to neutrality and said it should advocate for ethical use. The dispute was about AI in creative writing, especially generative text—not every kind of writing technology. Authors Maureen Johnson and Daniel José Older resigned from the board, and other authors publicly distanced themselves, according to Publishers Weekly.

Blades told The Guardian that the organization’s position had been covered “frankly so inaccurately”; the outlet also reported that the statement’s wording and revisions drew backlash. The AI dispute damaged trust, but the closure coverage does not establish it as the sole or direct cause. The Guardian’s report and Publishers Weekly’s coverage describe the controversy and the organization’s response.
What were the child-safety and moderation concerns?
The Guardian reported that community members complained to the board in November 2023 about staff handling allegations made in May 2023. Those allegations concerned a forum moderator said to have groomed children on another website. According to the report, the moderator was later removed for unrelated code-of-conduct violations, weeks after the initial complaints, and further child-safety complaints followed.

There is no official organization continuing the former nonprofit’s work. NaNo 2.0 says it formed as an all-volunteer group after the nonprofit closed and offers a challenge and word tracker. NaNoWriMo.ca describes itself as an unaffiliated resource center for communities and local connections. These are separate initiatives, not successors to the former nonprofit as a legal entity.
