He did not wrestle in the match or affect its result: the surprise came in the closing moments of the show, after Cody Rhodes had pinned Damian Priest to secure the win. By the November 25, 2024 anniversary, Punk had gone from an unexpected post-match appearance to a member of Roman Reigns’ WarGames team.
What happened when CM Punk returned at Survivor Series?
Survivor Series: WarGames took place in Chicago on Saturday, November 25, 2023. In the men’s WarGames match, Randy Orton joined Seth Rollins, Cody Rhodes, Jey Uso and Sami Zayn. Rhodes hit Cross Rhodes on Damian Priest to end the match and give his team the victory. Only after the result was settled did Punk appear.
WWE presented the appearance as a surprise, and contemporaneous coverage also described it that way. Punk entered to “Cult of Personality,” knelt in his familiar pose and said, “It’s clobberin’ time!”, ABC News reported the following day. The crowd’s roar was part of the scene, but the important distinction is the timing: this was a post-match return, not a surprise entrant in WarGames.
Why was the return a major WWE moment?
Punk’s previous official WWE appearance had been at the 2014 Royal Rumble, according to a WWE-owned retrospective published in 2023. That makes “nearly ten years away from official WWE programming” a fair description of the gap. It does not mean he had been absent from wrestling or public life: he returned to wrestling in 2021 and competed for AEW before his WWE appearance.

Accounts of the circumstances around his AEW exit differ on the month, so the reliable point for this timeline is simply that he had left AEW before returning to WWE. The available accounts do not establish a definitive private explanation for the WWE return or the people involved in arranging it.
At the post-event news conference, WWE chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque described the deal as “one of those lightning-in-a-bottle moments that came together very quickly,” and added, “But we are incredibly excited about it.” He also said, “Everybody grows; everybody changes. I’m a different person; he’s a different person.” ABC News reported these remarks on November 26, 2023. They record Levesque’s public reaction; they do not independently verify what either man thought or what happened in private.

How did WWE follow up the surprise?
The return quickly became an ongoing on-screen story. WWE announced that Punk would appear on Monday Night Raw on November 27, two days after Survivor Series. That follow-up made the appearance more than a closing image at a major event: viewers had a near-term chance to see how WWE would continue the story.
On November 25, 2024, WWE published a video listing titled “Behind the scenes of CM Punk’s WWE return at Survivor Series 2023,” described as containing never-before-released backstage footage. The listing establishes the video’s subject and publication date; without verified viewing of the footage, it is not possible to say what particular scenes it shows.

Where was Punk one year after his return?
In its November 29, 2024 preview of Survivor Series: WarGames, WWE said Punk had become the fifth member of Roman Reigns’ team, following Paul Heyman’s return to SmackDown the previous Friday. That was the anniversary-era position in WWE’s storyline, distinct from the 2023 reveal: Punk went from appearing after a completed match in Chicago to being announced as part of a WarGames team the following year.
The two milestones show how the first return moment and its later follow-up served different purposes. The 2023 appearance was an unexpected reveal at the end of a show; the 2024 team announcement placed Punk directly inside the build to another WarGames match. That later role should not be treated as proof that his first year had been mapped out in advance.
