Lies We Tell is a 2023 Irish period thriller directed by Lisa Mulcahy. It follows Maud, an 18-year-old whose uncle’s guardianship threatens both her inheritance and her freedom. The film is inspired by J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s novel Uncle Silas.
What is Lies We Tell about?
The story takes place at the isolated estate of Knowl. After her father’s death, Maud is due to inherit the estate when she turns 21, while her uncle Silas is appointed her guardian. Silas initially presents himself with genteel manners, but resents the inheritance and tries to control Maud. The conflict centers on her autonomy and her right to her inheritance in a society that restricts women.
Embankment Films’ synopsis promises a late confrontation and describes Maud becoming a forceful, ruthless figure. The Galway Film Fleadh called the film a “contained psychological thriller about a gaslit girl’s break for freedom.”
Who made the film?
Lisa Mulcahy directed the film. Agnes O’Casey plays Maud, David Wilmot plays Silas, and Chris Walley plays Edward. It is an Irish period thriller; it should not be confused with other films that share the title Lies We Tell.
