The older app did use a device camera for a gesture-copying feature, but that is different from secretly photographing someone. Fact-checkers also found the viral claim that the app secretly took a child’s picture false.
Where the “camera in her eye” claim came from
Images and posts alleging that a person could be seen in Talking Angela’s eye circulated alongside claims that the app was secretly watching children. But an apparent reflection in a character’s eye is not evidence of a live camera feed. PolitiFact rated a related claim—that the app secretly took a child’s picture—false in 2019, and Lead Stories reached the same conclusion in a 2022 fact-check.
Those reviews address the surveillance allegation; they do not identify the source or rendering method of every historical image of Angela’s eye. A screenshot of an alleged figure in the eye therefore cannot establish that the app was recording or transmitting a camera view.
What the older camera feature actually did
In a hands-on report about the app in February 2014, The Guardian described a camera feature that invited users to make gestures so Angela could imitate them. The reporter listed nodding, shaking one’s head, smiling, yawning, and sticking out one’s tongue. That is evidence of a camera-enabled interaction in the version described at the time—not evidence of hidden photography.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction matters: saying the app never used a camera would be inaccurate, but the documented use does not substantiate the claim that a camera was concealed in Angela’s eye or that the app secretly took a player’s picture.
What the heart button and text chat did
The heart button
The heart control was also misrepresented in the rumor. PolitiFact’s 2019 review says it generated a fortune featuring a picture of Angela that users could save; it did not take a picture of the player. Lead Stories reported the same distinction in 2022.

The former text-chat feature
The app’s older text-chat feature is a separate historical issue. The Guardian’s 2014 account discussed chat and raised concerns about the app’s child mode. PolitiFact said in 2019 that the old chat option appeared to have been removed across versions, and Lead Stories reported in 2022 that the feature had been removed by 2019. Do not treat those earlier descriptions as proof that current builds include the same chat functionality.
How the app’s history differs from later versions
Descriptions of Talking Angela need to be tied to the version and date being discussed. The 2014 reporting covered an older release, while later fact-checks examined the renewed picture-taking claim and reported different app behavior.

| Date and source | What was reported | What it does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| February 2014, The Guardian | A camera feature for copying gestures; child mode, text chat, external YouTube access, ads, and in-app purchases were also discussed. | Documents features and concerns reported for that version, not necessarily later builds. |
| February 2014, Outfit7 co-founder and CEO Samo Login, quoted by The Guardian | Login said the app’s responses were pre-scripted and that the engine did not communicate with the company’s servers. | This is a company representative’s description of the version discussed in the interview, not an independent audit of later versions. |
| May 2019, PolitiFact | Rated the claim that the app secretly took a child’s picture false; said the heart produced an Angela fortune image and the old chat option appeared to have been removed. | Addresses the reviewed claim and app behavior at that time. |
| January 2022, Lead Stories | Reported that its app review did not find the feared personal questions, that the heart produced Angela’s fortune rather than a player photo, and that text chat had been removed by 2019. | Describes the app Lead Stories examined; it does not establish that every future build behaves identically. |
In the 2014 interview, Login’s statement was: “We have no communication to our servers: the brains of the engine are in the mobile app, and everything that the engine responds is pre-scripted.” That is a dated company statement, not independent proof about all versions or current data practices.
