Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 16 and up, citing graphic slasher violence, frequent strong language and mature themes. For an older teen, the decision depends on their response to gore and frightening scenes, and on your family’s standards.
Which Scream is this guide about?
This guide covers the 1996 film directed by Wes Craven, a 111-minute slasher that also parodies horror conventions. Later films in the franchise may have different content and age guidance, so this recommendation should not be applied to them automatically. Common Sense Media’s film guide identifies the film and describes its content.

What age guidance is available?
Common Sense Media’s editorial recommendation is 16+. Its parent-review and child-review summaries each describe opinions clustering around age 13+, but those are crowdsourced impressions—not the guide’s editorial recommendation or an official age classification. The figures answer different questions and should not be treated as a single consensus age.
The guide reports an R rating and cites violence, profanity, sex and mature themes as reasons. That rating is reported by Common Sense Media; a primary Motion Picture Association listing was not established here. Ratings and guidance can vary by jurisdiction, and the sources below do not establish a film-specific BBFC classification.

What content might concern parents?
Violence, gore and frightening scenes
Common Sense Media characterizes the violence and scariness as “a lot.” Its description includes repeated threats and murders, bloody injuries, stabbings, slit throats, close-range shootings, strangling, beatings, a broken neck and electrocution. Characters are also found disemboweled or hanging. The film includes jump scares and references to rape, torture, suicide and murder.
Language
The guide describes frequent strong profanity and insults, and rates the language as “a lot.”
Rank #2
Sexual themes
Teen characters talk frankly about sex, virginity, promiscuity and affairs. The guide notes kissing and touching over clothes, a character taking off her bra without showing breasts, and sex implied off-screen.
Alcohol, driving and smoking
The film depicts underage drinking at a teen party and dangerous driving under the influence. An adult character smokes cigarettes.

Humor does not make the violence mild
Scream is self-aware and makes jokes about slasher conventions, but its genre humor sits alongside brutal, bloody violence. A child who enjoys spooky stories may still find its killings or imagery upsetting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether it suits your child
Consider the specific content rather than relying on a single age number. The key questions are whether your child can handle graphic injuries and jump scares, how they react to sustained threats, and whether your family is comfortable with strong profanity, sexual discussion, implied sex and underage drinking. An older teen’s maturity and individual sensitivities matter; the lower ages in review summaries are other viewers’ opinions, not a guarantee of suitability.
Common Sense Media provides the film-specific content description and its separate editorial and review-summary guidance. The BBFC explains how its ratings and content advice help audiences make informed viewing decisions, and its parent resources discuss threat and horror in classification. Those general resources do not establish a BBFC rating for this particular film.
