The U.S. Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates it Teen and lists lyrics, suggestive themes, violence, and in-game purchases. Fortnite also includes other experiences with their own ratings, so parents considering one of those should check its rating and review its chat, purchase, and supervision settings before deciding.
What the Teen rating means for Fortnite Battle Royale
The ESRB’s U.S. rating record says, “Fortnite Battle Royale is rated T for Teen by the ESRB with Lyrics, Suggestive Themes, and Violence.” The record also identifies in-game purchases as a feature. These descriptors explain the rating; they do not predict exactly how any one child will respond. See the ESRB rating record.
This rating applies to Battle Royale, not automatically to every activity available through Fortnite. Epic says each Fortnite experience has its own rating, and parents can restrict access to experiences above a selected rating level. Check the specific experience a child wants to play rather than relying on the Fortnite name alone. Ratings may differ by region; the rating cited here is from the U.S. ESRB. What to check before allowing another Fortnite experience
If you are considering an experience other than Battle Royale, assess these factors for that specific experience and the child’s account:

- Rating and descriptors: Check the experience’s own age rating and content descriptors. A lower rating does not by itself settle whether its online features or content are right for your child.
- Chat: Decide whether voice or text chat should be available, and with whom. Epic says the maximum setting for voice and text chat for children under 10 is Friends Only. Epic’s chat-settings guidance.
- Purchases: Review Epic’s purchase permissions and any relevant platform settings. The ESRB lists in-game purchases for Battle Royale; parental controls let parents manage purchase permissions, but should not be treated as a guarantee that every spending prompt disappears. - Supervision: Consider whether you can review what the child is playing and supervise play, especially when other people can communicate with them.
How chat, accounts, and reporting affect safety
Epic says Cabined Accounts can play Fortnite while some features remain restricted until a parent or guardian provides consent. Consent and account controls can affect features such as chat and purchases, but they do not change the experience’s rating or make it automatically suitable for a particular child. Epic also says voice reporting is always on in public Game Channels and allows audio or text to be submitted as evidence of suspected Community Rules violations. Reporting is a way to respond to a concern, not a guarantee that harmful contact will not occur. Epic notes that platform-level chat systems may remain accessible even when chat is disabled inside an Epic game, so check the console or device’s controls as well as Epic’s settings. A practical decision for parents
For Battle Royale, the Teen rating makes “not by default” the prudent answer for a 7-year-old. If you are weighing a different Fortnite experience, make the decision experience by experience: check its rating, set communication and purchase limits, review platform controls, and decide whether the play can be supervised.
