No—the Season 2 finale does not confirm that Ellie is dead. Abby points her gun at Ellie in the theater, a shot rings out, and the episode cuts to black before showing who was hit. The final scene then rewinds to Seattle Day 1 from Abby’s perspective, leaving the cliffhanger unresolved.
What happens in the Season 2 finale?
After killing Owen and Mel at the aquarium, Ellie discovers that Mel was pregnant. Shaken by what she has done, she returns to the theater with Tommy and Jesse. The group decides to stop pursuing Abby and head home.
Abby arrives at the theater seeking revenge. She shoots Jesse and holds Tommy and Ellie at gunpoint. Ellie lowers her weapon, identifies herself as the person who killed Abby’s friends, and explains the connection to Joel and the hospital. Abby aims at Ellie. A gunshot sounds, but the episode cuts away without revealing its target.
Did Abby shoot Ellie?
The show does not say. The sound of a gunshot followed by a cut to black is a cliffhanger, not confirmation that Ellie was hit or killed. The theater scene ends without identifying who was shot or establishing whether Ellie survives.

Why does the finale switch to Abby’s perspective?
After the theater cliffhanger, the final scene jumps back to Seattle Day 1 and begins aligning the next part of the story with Abby’s point of view. It is a narrative handoff rather than an answer about Ellie’s fate. In an interview with TheWrap on May 25, 2025, co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin said, “There is another side to this story that we have yet to really delve into.”
Why is Ellie shaken by what she has done?
Ellie’s revenge has killed people who were not responsible for Joel’s death. At the aquarium, she realizes too late that Mel was pregnant. Mazin told TheWrap that the realization that Mel did not deserve to die “breaks” Ellie. He described both Ellie and Abby as moving forward in “moral trouble,” with their certainty beginning to fail.

The finale leaves Ellie’s next choice—and the consequences of Abby’s shot—unshown. In a post-season interview with Bell Media’s The Lede, Mazin said he wanted viewers to feel that the characters “aren’t where they were, but they’re not yet where they are going to go.”

The series adapts The Last of Us Part II, but it changes the order of events and some character encounters. TheWrap reports changes to the timing of events and Ellie’s encounters with the Seraphites and aquarium animals; Sky’s finale recap also notes differences in the Owen and Mel scene. These examples show that the game is useful context, not a guarantee of exactly how the television story will unfold.
