Borderlands is a credible pick for one of the worst-reviewed theatrical video-game adaptations—and a leading candidate for the worst. But “worst ever” is a judgment, not an objectively settled ranking: the answer depends on which films and reviews count. The clearest evidence is stark: Metacritic lists the 2024 film at 26/100 from 36 critic reviews, while Rotten Tomatoes’ video-game-movie guide limits its comparison to theatrical releases with at least 20 reviews.
How badly did critics rate Borderlands?
As of October 8, 2026, Metacritic lists Borderlands at 26/100 from 36 critic reviews, a rating it classifies as “Generally Unfavorable.” Its review breakdown is one positive, 16 mixed and 19 negative. The spread matters: the response was overwhelmingly poor, but not unanimous. Metacritic also shows a user score of 3.3/10 from 415 ratings, a separate audience measure that should not be treated as the same thing as the critics’ score. Metacritic’s Borderlands page updates its review and rating counts, so these totals may change.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus sums up the reception this way: “Glitching out in every department, Borderlands is balderdash.” Rotten Tomatoes’ film page identifies the movie as a 2024 release directed by Eli Roth. Its stars include Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis and Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina.
Can it fairly be called the worst video-game movie ever?
It can fairly be called a leading candidate, but no single score proves that it is objectively the worst. Rotten Tomatoes’ video-game-movie guide uses a 20-review minimum and covers theatrical releases. That provides a defined comparison pool, not a universal ranking of every game adaptation: streaming films, titles with fewer reviews and alternative scoring methods may fall outside it.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes also use different methods and review samples. Their scores should not be compared as though they were interchangeable percentages, and a place near the bottom of one list would establish only a result under that list’s rules. “Worst ever” remains a defensible critical verdict rather than a settled fact.
What critics said went wrong
Critics represented on Metacritic repeatedly objected to the film’s execution, describing it as bland or incoherent and faulting it for losing qualities that distinguished the games. TheWrap’s William Bibbiani wrote: “All the edges have been sanded down so it can be safe and mainstream, but they went too far and there’s almost nothing left.” RogerEbert.com likewise criticized the adaptation for losing what worked in the games. These are critics’ assessments, not independently measured explanations for the film’s reception.

The criticism points to a central adaptation problem: the movie could retain the franchise’s names, characters and setting yet still feel unlike the games to some reviewers. That gap between recognizable ingredients and a distinctive identity is a stronger explanation of the negative response than the idea that simply using a game as source material guarantees a successful film.
Why the film’s identity became a question
Borderlands opened in U.S. theaters on August 9, 2024. It is a PG-13, 102-minute action-adventure comedy distributed by Lionsgate. Rotten Tomatoes’ background account says the film was not intended as a direct adaptation of one specific game; it also traces a long development, from Lionsgate’s 2015 announcement through filming in Hungary in 2021 and later reshoots overseen by Tim Miller on Roth’s behalf. The account reports that Joe Crombie replaced Craig Mazin as credited co-writer after Mazin removed his name. Rotten Tomatoes’ production background recounts that history retrospectively.

The PG-13 rating and Roth’s later comments offer context for the debate about the film’s tone, but they do not prove why it failed with critics. In a 2026 interview with PC Gamer, Roth described the adaptation as “something that belonged to nobody.” He said it was neither a children’s movie nor the kind of extreme game adaptation some fans might expect, adding that it ended up “neither fish nor fowl.” That is the director’s retrospective explanation, not independent confirmation that the rating or any one production decision caused the reviews.
Did the box office confirm the critical verdict?
The Numbers lists an opening weekend of $8,601,572 and a reported production budget of $115 million. Those figures provide additional context for the film’s reception, but the budget is a database-reported figure, not an audited studio statement; neither figure alone explains the movie’s critical standing. The Numbers’ film page is the source for both figures and lists an August 30, 2024 video release.

The verdict
Borderlands has a strong case as one of the worst-reviewed widely covered theatrical video-game adaptations, and “a leading candidate for the worst” is supportable when the comparison rules are made clear. Calling it definitively the worst ever goes further than the available rankings can establish. What is not in doubt is the harsh critical result: Metacritic’s recorded score is deeply unfavorable, and critics cited there faulted the film for dull execution and for failing to preserve what made the games distinctive.
