Author Peter Benchley said the idea began with a 1964 newspaper item about a large great white caught near Montauk, New York. The deadly 1916 New Jersey shark attacks are a striking historical parallel, but Benchley said they did not inspire his novel.
What inspired Peter Benchley to write Jaws?
Benchley’s official biography gives his account of the idea’s starting point: “In 1964, I read a newspaper item about a fisherman who caught a 4,550-lb. Great White Shark not far offshore from Montauk, Long Island, and I wondered what would happen if such a huge shark were to appear in a seaside resort community.” The figure is the weight reported in Benchley’s account, not an independently verified measurement. He said he began weaving the idea into the novel seven years later. Peter Benchley’s official biography

That premise—an enormous shark appearing near a resort community—became the seed for a fictional story. It does not mean the film depicts the Montauk catch or a specific real attack.
Did the 1916 New Jersey shark attacks inspire Jaws?
The attacks happened, and the resemblance to the story’s central threat helps explain why they are often linked to Jaws. But resemblance is not evidence of authorship: Benchley told The New York Times that the 1916 attacks were not his inspiration. HISTORY also recounts both the attacks and Benchley’s statement. Some summaries, including a CBS archive description, call the attacks an inspiration. That shorthand conflicts with Benchley’s own account of his intent, so the more precise distinction is that 1916 is a historical parallel, while the Montauk clipping is the starting point he named. What happened in the 1916 attacks?
In July 1916, a series of attacks struck the New Jersey coast. Charles Vansant was fatally attacked at Beach Haven on July 1. Charles Bruder died after an attack near Spring Lake five days later. On July 12, attacks in Matawan Creek killed 11-year-old Lester Stillwell and injured Stanley Fisher, who later died. Twelve-year-old Joseph Dunn survived an attack near the creek’s mouth. These events caused public alarm, but they do not establish the source of Benchley’s plot.

A shark caught later that day was suspected of being involved, but the identification was never conclusive. The species responsible for the attacks remains disputed; possibilities discussed include bull, tiger, and great white sharks. National Geographic’s account of the 1916 attacks and disputed species
How much of Jaws is connected to real places and people?
Amity and the filming locations
The fictional setting and the production locations are not the same. Benchley’s novel places Amity on Long Island. Nantucket inspired the fictional town, while the film was shot on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, according to the Associated Press. Associated Press feature on the film’s locations and legacy

Quint and Frank Mundus
Frank Mundus, a Montauk fisherman associated with catching large sharks, is sometimes linked to Quint, the shark hunter in the story. National Geographic describes the connection as a rumor; Benchley never confirmed that Mundus was Quint’s model. It is fair to note the reported association, but not to present it as established fact.

- The 1916 attacks involved a series of shark incidents along a resort coast, making them an evocative parallel to the danger at the heart of Jaws.
- Popular accounts sometimes collapse that resemblance into the simpler claim that the attacks inspired the novel.
- Benchley’s own account points instead to the 1964 Montauk newspaper item as the spark for imagining a huge shark near a seaside resort.
Keeping those details separate gives the clearest answer: the novel and film are fictional, their author named a real shark report as the premise’s starting point, and the 1916 attacks remain a related but distinct historical event.
