A rumor about Tony Stark’s return points to Avengers: Secret Wars, but Marvel and Disney have not confirmed that Iron Man will appear. What is confirmed is that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom—a different character.
When could Iron Man return?
The leak points to Avengers: Secret Wars, not Avengers: Doomsday. BGR’s October 19, 2022 report attributed the claim to the social-media account MyTimeToShineHello, which posted, “Secret Wars yes, Kang Dynasty no.” BGR interpreted that as a claim that Iron Man would appear in Secret Wars; the post did not provide a scene, date, or explanation for how Tony Stark might return. SuperHeroHype reported on March 31, 2026 that the same leaker had again claimed Tony Stark/Iron Man would return in Secret Wars. That shows the rumor has resurfaced, but it is not independent confirmation from Marvel or Disney. SuperHeroHype’s report
What Marvel and Disney have confirmed
Disney announced on July 27, 2024 that Downey would return to the MCU as Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. The announcement also named Joe and Anthony Russo as directors of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. It did not announce a return as Tony Stark. Director Joe Russo described the Doom casting as “proof of the unimaginable possibilities in the Marvel multiverse,” but that statement concerned Downey playing Doom—not Iron Man returning. Disney’s current Avengers: Doomsday page lists a theatrical release date of December 18, 2026 and identifies Downey as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. That confirms his announced role in Doomsday; it does not establish that he will also play Stark in either Avengers film. Disney’s Doomsday page
Why an Iron Man appearance is still speculation
Tony Stark died at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Japan’s July 20, 2026 teaser coverage describes Stark/Iron Man as the deceased former hero while presenting Downey as Doctor Doom. Some entertainment coverage has proposed ways Stark might appear, such as a multiverse variant or a time-displaced version. Those are theories, not reported casting details. A multiverse story could make a variant possible as a plot device, but possibility is not evidence that Marvel plans to use one. BGR’s discussion and ComicBook.com’s discussion treat such ideas as speculation.

The useful distinction is between a social-media claim repeated by entertainment outlets and an official Marvel or Disney announcement. Until Marvel Studios or Disney confirms a Tony Stark/Iron Man appearance, Secret Wars is only the rumored possibility; no specific appearance date or scene has been established.
