Sheeran’s connection includes shirt sponsorship from 2021 and a minority stake reported in 2024. Simpson’s best-documented connection is a 2003 interview in which he called Ipswich his club while growing up and said he had invested in a share issue.
Why is Ed Sheeran associated with Ipswich Town?
Sheeran is a lifelong Ipswich Town supporter, according to BBC Sport reporting in November 2024. His connection became especially visible when he sponsored the club’s shirts for the 2021–22 season.
Shirt sponsorship began in 2021
Ipswich announced Sheeran as shirt sponsor for the 2021–22 season after he enquired about backing the club. The arrangement covered both the men’s and women’s shirts, as reported by The Guardian. This is a historical account of the deal, not confirmation of the club’s current shirt sponsor.
In The Guardian’s May 2021 report, Sheeran said: “I have always enjoyed my trips to Portman Road and I’m looking forward to going back there as soon as supporters are allowed into stadiums again.”
A minority stake was reported in 2024
BBC Sport reported in August 2024 that Sheeran had acquired a minority stake in Ipswich Town. The report describes him as a shareholder, not as the club’s owner or controller; it does not provide a share percentage.

His involvement in a recruitment call
In a November 2024 BBC Sport report, Ipswich chairman and chief executive Mark Ashton said Sheeran had joined a Zoom call with a player the club was trying to persuade to sign. Ashton described him as “A local man, global superstar, sponsor of the football club, now a shareholder and now officially part of our recruitment team,” adding that Sheeran spoke with the player at the training ground before going on stage with Taylor Swift. The report did not name the player. It records an attributed episode, not a continuing formal recruitment position.
In BBC Sport’s August 2024 report, Sheeran summed up his connection by saying: “It’s such a joy to be a fan of Ipswich Town.”

How do their Ipswich connections differ?
| Person | What is documented | When | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ed Sheeran | Lifelong support; shirt sponsorship of the men’s and women’s teams; a reported minority stake; and a player-recruitment call described by the club’s chief executive | Sponsorship began in 2021; the stake and call were reported in 2024 | A share percentage, control of the club, current sponsorship status, or an ongoing recruitment role |
| Charlie Simpson | Directly described Ipswich as his club while growing up; reported investment in a club share issue | TWTD report dated 19 December 2003 | Whether he still holds shares or the extent of any current club involvement |
Sheeran’s public involvement is broader and more recently documented. Simpson’s support is supported by his direct statement in 2003 and the contemporaneous report of his investment. Those differences describe the available public evidence, not a ranking of their personal devotion or a claim that either is objectively among Ipswich’s most famous supporters.
