Neena Kulkarni has said that playing a mother is not, by itself, a character description: the woman’s circumstances and relationships are what make the role specific. In a 2018 interview with Scroll, she put it simply: “For me, being a mother is incidental.” Her work as Mrs Iyer in Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, alongside roles in film and theatre, illustrates how that perspective travels across different kinds of production.
Why Kulkarni starts with the woman, not the motherhood
Asked about the nuances of playing mothers, Kulkarni rejected the idea of motherhood as a ready-made character type. She described the character first as a woman or human being; her relationship with her children then helps shape the role. That distinction leaves room for mothers who disagree, make difficult choices, or are defined by more than their family position.
She connected believable performance to circumstance rather than a simple moral verdict. “I never think characters are about right or wrong,” she told Scroll in 2018. As an example, she discussed her mother in Breathe, who discovers that her son is a killer and, in Kulkarni’s account, gives consent. The point was not to make the choice ordinary, but to understand the character through the situation she faces.
Mrs Iyer: continuity within a long-running television role
Kulkarni played Mrs Iyer, a South Indian character, in Star Plus’s Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. In the Scroll interview published October 8, 2018, she said she had played the part for five years and had learned a little Tamil to make it more authentic. In a separate interview with The Indian Express published January 24, 2022, she described the character as having stayed with her for six years. These are duration estimates from interviews at different dates, not a single standardized tenure figure.

She also described keeping the characterization consistent while directors changed during the television production. That continuity mattered in a medium where an actor returns to the same person over an extended period, rather than building a role only for the span of a single film.
How television, film and theatre shaped her experience
Kulkarni has described the mediums as different working conditions, not as interchangeable versions of the same job. Her comments reflect her own experience at particular points in her career, rather than a general ranking of the industries.

Television: an ongoing process
In the 2018 Scroll interview, Kulkarni described television as an ongoing process that lets actors keep exploring a character. She said that the director and the medium affect the work. Her experience with Mrs Iyer—maintaining a consistent characterization through a production with changing directors—offers a concrete example of that continuity.
In 2014, speaking to PTI in an interview published by The Indian Express, she said, “TV offers better scope to veteran actors.” She attributed that view to television’s variety of characters and the longevity possible through long-running serials. In the same interview, she felt film stories often offered supporting actors fewer opportunities. These were her perceptions in 2014, not an objective measure of either medium.

Film: a bounded role and specific collaborators
Kulkarni’s remarks about film point to the importance of the production and the people shaping it. In 2014, she said she considered a film’s scale and director, while judging television roles more directly by the roles themselves. In discussing Noces—titled A Wedding in the 2018 Scroll profile—she said the part came to her through word of mouth. The producers wanted an actress of her age who spoke French and Urdu; she described the character’s beliefs and circumstances as central to her performance.
The same profile discussed her work in the 2018 short film Maa, directed by Niranjan Iyengar, in which she played the titular role. These dated examples show different kinds of film work; they should not be read as a current project list or a statement about where the titles are available to watch.

Theatre: character work before television
Kulkarni recalled playing a 40-year-old mother in the theatre production Mahasagar when she was 22. She described the character as layered. In 2022, she recalled that television’s pace initially felt scary after theatre, before she learned to understand its technical demands. Her account makes the contrast personal: theatre had prepared her for sustained character work, but television required adapting to a different pace and production process.

The 2018 Scroll profile described Kulkarni’s career at that time as a “40-year career” across theatre, film and television. That figure belongs to the profile’s description published in 2018; it is not a newly recalculated total. Likewise, her five-year and six-year descriptions of Mrs Iyer come from interviews published in 2018 and 2022 respectively. The dated statements are useful for understanding how she spoke about the role at those moments, but they should not be collapsed into a current career or tenure statistic.

Taken together, Kulkarni’s comments offer a consistent way of thinking about acting across mediums: begin with a person shaped by circumstance, then account for the form and production in which that person must live. For a mother on screen or stage, the relationship to her children is one part of the character—not a substitute for the character herself.
