In a 2025 interview with Nandini Ramnath for Scroll.in, Dasgupta describes Ghatak as “a filmmaker far ahead of his time” whose work continues to feel relevant.
Why does Dasgupta say Ghatak is still relevant?
Dasgupta links Ghatak’s films to people forced from home and left searching for a place in the world. He sees those concerns, rooted in the history and aftermath of Partition, as resonant with contemporary refugee crises. That is his critical interpretation, not a statistical claim about displacement or a measurement of the films’ influence.
As Dasgupta puts it: “I think what people are seeing when they watch a Ritwik film is a filmmaker far ahead of his time, who, while working within the context of his day, was addressing issues that remain very real today, fifty-sixty-seventy years on.” The phrase is rhetorical: it expresses his sense of the films’ endurance rather than a quantified finding.

The interview names several works across Ghatak’s career, including films that approach displacement and belonging through different stories and forms.

Dasgupta names Subarnarekha as his favourite, with Meghe Dhaka Tara and Ajantrik close behind. He also says that, in his view, viewers may need more experience with cinema to fully appreciate Ghatak’s work beyond Bari Theke Paliye and Ajantrik; this is a personal assessment, not a prerequisite for watching the films.
What is distinctive about Ghatak’s filmmaking?
Dasgupta’s appreciation is not limited to subject matter. He points to the force of Ghatak’s framing, camera angles, sound, noise and music, as well as theatrical staging and the way landscape and human figures share wide compositions. These are critical observations about the films’ expressive craft, not technical measurements.

The interview also relays a statement attributed to Ghatak in a 1960s interview: “For the people. What else is there but people? The last word in all art is the people.” The original interview details are not supplied in the Scroll article, so the quotation is best understood as one relayed there.
What was Ghatak’s legacy during and after his life?
The interview describes Ghatak as receiving less recognition during his lifetime than his work deserved. It also points to his 1966 teaching stint at the Film and Television Institute of India as an important source of influence on younger filmmakers, including Mani Kaul and Kumar Shahani. The interview offers no numerical measure of that influence.

Dasgupta contrasts Ghatak’s relative popular appeal with that of Satyajit Ray and composer Salil Chowdhury, while noting renewed attention around the centenary and interest among younger filmmakers. These are observations made in the 2025 conversation, not a current audience survey.
Where does the centenary anthology fit in?
Unmechanical – Ritwik Ghatak In 50 Fragments, edited by Shamya Dasgupta and published by Westland Books, is the occasion for the interview. The anthology brings together 50 essays along with archival writing, interviews, photographs, poems and illustrations, offering multiple ways into Ghatak’s work and legacy.

Can viewers find Ghatak’s films today?
The 2025 interview notes better availability of restored, well-subtitled prints, but that should not be taken to mean every film is easy to find. The BFI’s 2026 guide says many of Ghatak’s works remain difficult for audiences to access. Taken together, the sources suggest that access has improved in some respects while remaining uneven; availability depends on the title and territory.
