In April 2024, news outlets reported that a Facebook appeal by Massachusetts mother Ashley McGuire led online sleuths to British chef Charles Withers, whom reports said women had spotted on dating apps in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. The family account and the reported search came from media coverage—not court, family, or other official records—and the sources do not establish what happened afterward.

Who was the search about?

PerthNow reported on April 8, 2024, that McGuire had posted a Facebook appeal seeking help locating her estranged husband, whom the outlet described as British and a chef. PerthNow’s version of the post did not name him. Inside Edition named him as Charles Withers in a follow-up published April 11; Fox News also identified Withers in its April 2024 coverage. PerthNow’s report, Inside Edition’s follow-up, and Fox News’ coverage are the available accounts of the story.

Fox News reported that Withers was born in London and appeared on Food Network’s Chopped in 2022. Inside Edition also reported his appearance on the show. The sources reviewed do not include a primary Food Network contestant record.

What did McGuire say in her appeal?

According to Inside Edition’s reproduction of McGuire’s Facebook post, she wrote: “I’m really about to test the power of Facebook with this one.” She said that when she was pregnant with their youngest child, her husband left, changed his phone number, and stopped being in contact with the family. Her account said he had not seen one child for more than a year and had never met the younger child.

Those are McGuire’s claims as reported by the outlets, not independently established findings. Inside Edition also reproduced her description of the departure: “When I was pregnant with our youngest baby, he decided being a husband and a dad wasn’t the lifestyle he wanted anymore and he ghosted, like gone without a trace.”

How did the online search reportedly work?

Inside Edition said women contacted McGuire with tips after seeing Withers on dating apps in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. The outlet described the search as taking 24 hours and quoted an online sleuth involved in the effort. That duration is the report’s account of the search, not an independently measured figure.

The coverage presents the episode as a social-media search that drew tips from people who recognized a person on dating apps. It does not establish the precise steps each participant took, or provide an official record confirming the reported location.

What is and is not established by the coverage?

  • Established as reported: McGuire made a public appeal, and Inside Edition and Fox News named Withers in their April 2024 coverage.
  • Not independently verified in these accounts: The reasons for the separation, the details of contact with the children, and the reported location and search timeline.
  • Not established afterward: The sources do not document later legal or custody outcomes, family circumstances, employment or wage disputes, or Withers’s current whereabouts.

PerthNow also recounted social-media claims about a former restaurant and alleged problems affecting former employees. Those claims were mediated through social-media accounts in its report; the reviewed coverage does not provide primary documentation to establish them as fact.
