In a 2019 interview with Scroll, Sahukar described Rishabh as an ordinary family man whose worries about his children, home loan and direction in life sit alongside an eccentric, neurotic streak he does not recognize in himself.
Who does Cyrus Sahukar play?
Sahukar plays Rishabh Malhotra, opposite Mini Mathur as Rishabh’s wife, Shefali. Rishabh is a father of three and, as Sahukar explained to Scroll, not a conventional comic “bad boy” or party-going lead. He approached the character as a recognizable man absorbed by family responsibilities and money worries.

“You usually either see the bad boy, the party boy, or an overly nice guy on television or in movies,” Sahukar told Scroll. He saw Rishabh as a different kind of comic figure: a basically ordinary husband and father whose anxieties and eccentricities make him funny.
What is Mind the Malhotras about?
The sitcom follows Rishabh and Shefali as they seek couples’ therapy after watching divorces unfold in their social circle. Their concern is not simply that their friends’ marriages have ended; it is the possibility that their own relationship could be headed in the same direction. The sessions provide a frame for comedy about marital stress, parenting and the strange, familiar rhythms of family life.

Sahukar told Scroll that Indian families could be “quite eccentric and crazy”. That observation fits the show’s comic focus on domestic behavior rather than on an outlandish premise: the Malhotras’ family life is recognizable, but its oddities are turned up for sitcom effect.
How did Sahukar approach playing a father?
In the Scroll interview, Sahukar said he was initially unsure how he would play a father because he did not have children himself. He focused instead on the practical concerns he could recognize in Rishabh: the children’s needs, the home loan and the broader question of where life was going. The character’s comedy comes partly from the gap between his self-image as an ordinary man and the eccentric, neurotic behavior others can see.

Sahukar also described the ease of working opposite Mathur, a longtime friend. That familiarity helped them shape the sense of an established couple on screen. It is a reported creative advantage, not a claim that the characters are portraits of the actors’ own relationship.
Is the series based on another show?
Yes. Mind the Malhotras is an Indian adaptation of the Israeli sitcom La Famiglia. Cinema Express describes the story as a couple seeking therapy to rekindle their relationship, with parental fulfillment and marital stress among its themes. The Indian Express also describes the therapy premise, in which divorces among friends prompt a couple to examine their own marriage.

In the production announcement, showrunner and co-director Sahil Sangha said the series takes the subtle quirks of family dynamics “up a notch.” The project was co-directed by Sangha and Ajay Bhuyan. Scroll credited Born Free Entertainment as producer and Applause Entertainment as presenter.
