A 2017 account by writer Wednesday Martin describes a New York City Skirt Club event where women socialized, watched a shibari rope demonstration and, for some, had sex with other women. The headline phrase “gay for a night” is framing, not a description of every attendee’s identity: Martin portrays participants as varied, and one event cannot establish how women generally experience sexuality.
What happened at the Skirt Club event?
Martin recounts attending a private New York gathering hosted by Skirt Club, which she describes as a women-only, members-oriented sex-party community. Her account moves from socializing to more explicitly erotic activities: a guest demonstrated shibari, a form of rope bondage; attendees took body shots; there was a hot tub; and sexual activity took place in bedrooms. These are details from the particular event Martin attended, not a template for every Skirt Club gathering.
The article is an account of one night rather than an independently verified survey or documentary record of the group. The original Rolling Stone feature named in the headline was not available in the accessible source material; the account available here is Martin’s first-person article, published November 29, 2017. Read Martin’s account.
Why was the event designed for women?
Martin attributes the club’s purpose to founder Genevieve LeJeune, who wanted an environment centered on women’s pleasure and free from men’s involvement or interference. Martin also reports that LeJeune had been frustrated by male attention at other sex parties. In Martin’s account, LeJeune explains: “But I had paid for my ticket. I wanted to be treated as a person with my own desires. I wanted a place for female-centered pleasure, without the involvement or interference of men,”

That statement conveys the founder’s reported motivation; it should not be treated as an official policy statement verified independently or as evidence about the present-day organization.
Were the women there all straight?
No. “Straight women are gay for a night” is the feature’s headline framing, not a reliable label for every person at the party. Martin describes attendees with differing self-identifications and experiences. A participant told her: “I’ve been married for almost twenty years and I just had sex with another woman who’s married. This party helped me find myself,” That is one person’s account of what the experience meant to her, not proof that everyone present was straight, that the event changed anyone’s orientation, or that all participants interpreted the night in the same way.

Martin reports that roughly 60% of participants categorized themselves between 0 and 2 on the Kinsey scale during the club’s application or vetting process. This is a historical figure from her 2017 reporting about that club’s applicants or participants, not a current membership statistic or a population estimate. The account does not include the underlying data or methodology, so the figure should be read as Martin’s report rather than an independently assessed measure.
What does the account say about sexual fluidity?
Martin discusses psychologist Lisa Diamond’s concept of “homopossibility” and summarizes a longitudinal study of 100 women. The account does not provide the original study citation or enough methodological detail to evaluate that summary independently. It can support saying that Martin used the idea to frame questions about sexual fluidity; it does not, on its own, establish a broad scientific conclusion about women’s sexuality.

- Cards Against Humanity is a party game for horrible people.
- Now version 2.0! Over 150 new cards since the last version.
- Contains 500 white cards and 100 black cards for maximum replayability.
- Includes a booklet of sensible game rules and preposterous alternate rules.
- America's #1 gerbil coffin.
The distinction matters: an individual may describe an experience, attraction or identity in a way that does not fit a simple assumption about fixed categories, but one event narrative cannot settle how sexual identity works for everyone. Martin’s article offers a participant-observer perspective, not a representative study.

Martin wrote in 2017 that LeJeune described Skirt Club as “5,000 members strong.” That is a historical membership figure attributed to the founder, not an independently verified count and not evidence of the organization’s current size. The same caution applies to the reported Kinsey-scale responses: they describe the club’s applicants or participants as reported at the time, not women generally.
