Spoilers for 1883 and 1923, including the 1923 season-two finale. Spencer Dutton is John Dutton III’s grandfather. Spencer and Alexandra’s son, John Dutton II, is John III’s father. The similarly named Jack Dutton belongs to a separate branch: he is the son of John Dutton I and Emma, not John III’s grandfather.

The Dutton family tree at a glance

The direct line from the founders in 1883 to the modern ranch family in Yellowstone runs through Spencer—not Jack:

  • James Dutton and Margaret Dutton are parents to Elsa, John Dutton I, and Spencer.
  • John Dutton I and Emma are Jack Dutton’s parents.
  • Spencer Dutton and Alexandra are parents to John Dutton II.
  • John Dutton II is the father of John Dutton III, the patriarch in Yellowstone.
  • John Dutton III is the father of Beth and Kayce.

So James is John III’s great-grandfather, Spencer is his grandfather, and Jacob is his great-great-uncle. Paramount+’s official Dutton family guide identifies Spencer and Alexandra’s son John II as John III’s father.

Which John Dutton is which?

The repeated name is the source of much of the confusion. These are three different generations, and Jack is a separate person in John I’s branch.

The crucial reveal comes in the 1923 season-two finale: Spencer and Alexandra’s child is John Dutton II. Earlier speculation that Jack might lead to John III’s branch is resolved by that reveal. TV Insider reports the finale’s confirmation, while Paramount+’s guide gives the John II-to-John III relationship: TV Insider’s finale coverage.

How 1883 establishes the family

1883 follows James and Margaret Dutton as they travel west with their teenage daughter Elsa and young son John. They establish the Yellowstone ranch in Montana, and Elsa’s death shapes where James settles. The show gives Elsa the central narrative role, but the branches that continue into the later family tree run through her brothers John and Spencer. Elsa is John Dutton III’s great-aunt, not his ancestor.

How 1923 connects the two branches

Jacob Dutton is James’s brother. After James, Margaret, and Elsa die, Jacob and his wife Cara help raise John and Spencer as their nephews. Their role as caregivers does not make them the boys’ biological parents. Jacob and Cara are not shown as having biological children in the family-tree coverage from NJ.com.

Where Yellowstone fits

Yellowstone centers on John Dutton III, the great-grandson of James and grandson of Spencer. His father is John Dutton II. John III’s children include Beth and Kayce, placing them in the next generation of the modern branch. The essential path is:
