For the best movie-watching setup, keep light off the screen and use only as much room lighting as you find comfortable. If you add light, make it dim, diffuse and indirect—often by placing a neutral-white light behind the TV and aiming it at the wall. A completely dark room is not essential, and there is no single proven brightness target for every home, especially for HDR.
Start by controlling reflections
Light that reflects in a television can compete with the picture, making dark scenes harder to see and the image appear washed out. Before changing picture settings or buying a light, check what the screen reflects. Sharp TV USA recommends inspecting the powered-off screen, when it acts like a mirror, and then moving or shading one light source at a time. Sharp TV USA’s viewing-lighting guide was published April 4, 2026.
Direct sunlight is a common daytime problem. Use blinds, curtains or shades to reduce glare while leaving enough daylight for the room to remain usable. At night, try placing shaded lamps to the side or behind the seating area, aimed away from the screen. If a light appears in the panel, reposition it rather than trying to compensate with brighter picture settings.
Should the room be completely dark?
No. A dark room can reduce reflections from screen glass, but it is not a requirement for every viewer or setup. Some people prefer a little surrounding light; a small amount can also change how the display’s blacks appear. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) explains that a darkened room reduces screen-glass reflections, while adding a small amount of room light changes the perception of the same displayed blacks. Those are observations about perception, not a promise that a particular light will improve the picture or reduce eye strain.

SMPTE’s 2015 engineering report describes a week-long study that sampled light every five minutes in 54 residential rooms across two parts of the country. In that study, 82% of daytime viewing occurred at 0–100 lux, with half below 30 lux; 95% of nighttime viewing occurred at 0–50 lux. These are observations from the study, not recommended targets for your home. The report also notes that reflections amounting to about 1% to 2% of ambient light incident on the display can be reflected from the screen. See the SMPTE Engineering Report: High Dynamic Range Imaging Ecosystem, approved September 19, 2015.
How to set up light behind a TV
A bias light is a light source behind a display that illuminates the wall rather than shining toward the viewer. The goal is a restrained, even glow—not bright points visible around the screen or a beam aimed into the room.

- Choose a suitable light. A dimmable, neutral-white LED strip is one practical option. Treat it as a category, not a tested winner: no particular brand or model was independently tested for this article.
- Place it behind the panel. Aim the strip at the wall and leave enough space for the light to spread. Adjust its brightness until the wall has a subtle, even halo.
- Consider the wall color. A strongly colored wall can tint the reflected light. If accurate color perception matters, neutral white is a sensible choice; saturated colors and color-cycling effects can alter how the image looks and draw attention from the film.
- Check power before using the TV’s USB port. Consult the television manual: available current and whether the port switches off with the TV vary by model.

Choose lighting for the room and viewing time
| Situation | Practical approach | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Night viewing with distracting reflections | Move, shade or switch off the light causing the reflection; add a dim, indirect light only if it suits your comfort. | Check the screen for reflected lamps and bright points. |
| Daytime viewing with direct sun | Use blinds, curtains or shades to reduce sunlight; keep the room comfortably usable. | Recheck the powered-off screen after adjusting window coverings. |
| Room feels too stark with the screen on | Try a dimmable light behind the TV, aimed at the wall, or a shaded lamp to the side or behind the seating area. | Keep light diffuse and away from the display. |
| Moving around in a darkened room | Consider a small path light near stairs or furniture. | Keep it subdued and out of the screen’s reflection. |
The room, screen finish, wall color, mounting clearance, available power and personal comfort all affect which option works. There is no need to buy a strip if moving a lamp or drawing a shade solves the problem.

What about HDR and professional reference lighting?
Professional mastering guidance should not be treated as a universal household rule. SMPTE’s 2015 report said the appropriate surround-light level for HDR mastering was then undefined and needed further testing across HDR-capable displays. That is a statement about the state of guidance at the time of publication, not a claim about current standards.
Dolby Professional Support’s available search-result excerpt describes a 5-nit ambient surround for reference viewing and matching bias-light luminance to a 5-nit perimeter patch when setting up bias lighting for Dolby Vision content creation. That is professional reference/content-creation guidance, not a blanket target for watching movies at home; the full Dolby page was not available for review. Dolby’s bias-light setup page for Dolby Vision content creation is the cited source.
