Released globally on Netflix on June 11, 2021, the film links the exhilaration of riding a board with questions about family, gender roles, education and who gets to choose a path of their own.
What is Skater Girl about?
Prerna’s life changes when Jessica, a London-bred advertising executive visiting the village to learn about her late father’s childhood, and her old friend introduce local children to skateboarding. As Prerna takes to the sport, she faces a choice between social expectations and her dream of competing in the National Skateboarding Championships. Jessica works to build a skatepark, making her an important catalyst in Prerna’s new opportunity.
Netflix describes the film as a coming-of-age story about “confidence, courage, and the profound impact of blazing your own trail.” That is the film’s promotional framing; the story itself gives the idea a concrete shape through Prerna’s growing desire to skate and the pressures around her.
How skateboarding becomes a story about freedom
The skateboard is more than a route to a competition. For Prerna, learning to ride creates space to test what she wants and what she can do. The physical thrill of movement gives the film its image of flight: a teenager finding a feeling of possibility in a place where her choices are constrained.

In her June 11, 2021 review for TIME, Stephanie Zacharek reads the film through themes of education, gender roles, caste and outsider intervention, as well as the freedom associated with skateboarding. Those are critical interpretations of the film, not documentary findings about every community in Rajasthan.
Jessica’s role—and the question of outside help
Jessica helps bring skateboarding to the village and works to build the park, but Prerna remains the story’s central figure: it is her interest, effort and ambition that give the sport its meaning. The film can also invite viewers to consider how an outsider’s assistance may carry assumptions about what a community needs. That tension is a way to read the story, rather than a claim that the film resolves every question about outside intervention.
