Frank Fritz and Mike Wolfe’s friendship began years before American Pickers. Wolfe said they met in middle school and became best friends. Their shared interest in finding old objects grew into the History series, which premiered in 2010. The relationship later went through a public estrangement, followed by renewed contact and what Wolfe described as reconciliation. In 2026, he called it a “once in a lifetime friendship.”
How Frank Fritz and Mike Wolfe became friends
Wolfe said he first met Fritz in middle school, long before either man was known for picking antiques on television. He recalled that Fritz supported his idea for a reality show about picking when other people were skeptical. Wolfe later described the path he, Fritz and Danielle “Dani” Colby began in 2009; American Pickers debuted in 2010, following Wolfe and Fritz as they searched for antiques and collectibles. What happened between them?
Their friendship was strained by the time Fritz left the show. In 2021, Fritz told The U.S. Sun, in remarks reported by TheWrap: “I haven’t talked to Mike in two years. He knew my back was messed up, but he didn’t call me up and ask how I was doing.” That is Fritz’s contemporaneous account of their distance. Wolfe’s public statement to TheWrap described their shared history differently in tone, saying, “I have known Frank for as long as I can remember, he’s been like a brother to me,” and characterizing their journey as one of “highs and lows, blessings and challenges.”
Wolfe later offered his account of some difficulties behind the estrangement. In a 2024 interview with People, reported by TV Insider, he said Fritz became addicted to opioids after a back injury and described an intervention and other efforts to help. Wolfe also said, “I don’t have the right to tell his story — only he does.” His comments explain how he understood part of the crisis; they do not establish every private disagreement or fully explain why the friendship fractured.

Why did Frank Fritz leave American Pickers?
In July 2021, History confirmed Fritz would not return to the series, according to TheWrap, which reported that he had appeared in more than 300 episodes. TheWrap also reported that Fritz said he had sought treatment for alcohol abuse before leaving. The available accounts do not establish that substance use alone caused either his departure or the breakdown in his friendship with Wolfe.
Did Frank Fritz and Mike Wolfe reconcile?
Wolfe said he and Fritz spoke again in 2022, and that forgiveness came easily once he understood what Fritz was going through. He also recalled visiting Fritz after Fritz suffered a stroke that year. A later retrospective reported a 2023 in-person reunion based on the account of a friend; that reunion detail is secondary reporting, rather than a direct statement from either man. Fritz’s final years and Wolfe’s tribute
Fritz did not fully recover from his 2022 stroke, according to his longtime friend Annette Oberlander, as reported by the Associated Press. He died on September 30, 2024, at age 60. The AP reported Wolfe was at his bedside. Oberlander remembered Fritz as “a fierce friend.”
In November 2024, Wolfe reflected on Fritz’s death and said, “I don’t have the right to tell his story — only he does.” In February 2026, speaking to the Daily Mail in an interview reported by TV Insider, Wolfe said, “I want people to know — and he would want people to know — that we loved each other like brothers.” He added, “We fought hard for him, and we loved him, and no matter how hard and no matter how much we wanted something for him, he had to make the decision to stop on his own.” Wolfe said he had avoided correcting the public feud narrative earlier out of respect for Fritz, and described their bond as a “once in a lifetime friendship.”
