It was reported closed by March 2016, after years of operational problems that included unpaid salaries and trainee allowances, inadequate equipment and facilities, and students leaving. The available reports do not establish whether a proposed conversion to a gymnastics centre happened or whether the academy later reopened.
What the academy set out to do
The Kerala Circus Academy opened on August 2, 2010, in a former theatre building at Chirakkuni, near Thalassery in Kerala. Its first intake was ten trainees from several Indian states and Nepal. The aim was to teach circus skills while students continued formal education at local schools, according to Scroll’s 2016 account.
The reported curriculum ranged beyond performance: trainees learned floor exercise, clowning and entertainment, tent building, dress-making, music and food preparation. The model depended on combining those practical skills with schooling, accommodation and sustained coaching.
How the academy’s problems unfolded
2014: a possible closure amid operational strain
A Times of India report dated August 3, 2014, described a decision in principle to close the academy. It counted nine students and one teacher at that time, and reported delayed salaries, unpaid allowances and stalled plans for a permanent campus. Those are contemporaneous reported conditions, not a complete financial audit. The Times of India report also reflects that closure was already being considered two years before later accounts said the academy had shut.

By March 2016: closure reported
Scroll reported in August 2016 that the academy had closed by March because the state government could not pay coaches and staff or provide trainee allowances. Its account identified Rohan Rahman as the last remaining trainee. Trainer K Raghavan said, “There is a limit to what we could do without proper equipment.” That is Raghavan’s assessment of the training constraints, not an official finding.
The Indian Express’s August 2016 report, “The Show Cannot Go On,” described students gradually leaving; after a summer vacation, it said Rahman was the only student to return. The academy was housed in the converted Rajkamal Talkies cinema, while the hostel was in a dilapidated building on the compound. The report also cited inadequate infrastructure and the absence of a proper syllabus.

Later accounts do not settle the academy’s present status
In August 2016, Scroll said the sports minister had held talks with officials and hinted that the premises might become a gymnastics centre. Sreedharan Champad, a circus artiste-turned-writer quoted in the article, questioned that direction: “How can the government promote circus by setting up a gymnastics centre?” The report describes a possibility, not a completed conversion. The Times of India called the academy no longer functional in 2017, but that account does not establish its status today.
None of these reports confirms a later reopening, a successor public circus academy, or completion of the proposed gymnastics conversion. A separate 2025 Tribune report covered circus performances in Delhi; that shows performance activity, not the status of this training institution or whether another public academy exists.

Why a school in Thalassery mattered
The academy’s closure carried significance beyond the loss of one training site because Thalassery has a longstanding connection to circus performers and training. Scroll’s 2016 report traces a local training tradition to Keeleri Kunhikkannan, whom it says established a facility there in 1888. It presents the Kerala Circus Academy as a government initiative intended to revive that tradition.
That history helps explain why the academy’s difficulties drew attention from circus practitioners. Champad told Scroll, “It was launched without enough ground work,” and said, “It failed to attract students from the beginning.” These are his views as a circus artiste-turned-writer. The reported decline also points to practical obstacles: limited staffing, poor facilities, missing equipment, weak student retention and a lack of reliable support for staff and trainees. The accounts describe several connected problems rather than establishing one definitive cause.

What the closure reports do—and do not—show
The 2014 and 2016 reports document a troubled institution and a reported closure, while the 2017 account calls it non-functional. They do not provide a current official status update. In particular, the possible gymnastics-centre plan should not be treated as proof that the site changed use. Nor does circus coverage elsewhere in India establish that another public training school replaced the academy.
For further historical context, Scroll names Sreedharan Champad’s book An Album of Indian Big Tops as a work chronicling Indian circus history. The article does not identify it as a source on the academy’s closure.
