The episode’s scale combines location work, large-scale practical effects and stunt equipment with visual effects.
Which episode contains the Battle of Rook’s Rest?
The battle takes place in season 2, episode 4, “The Red Dragon and the Gold.” The official companion podcast’s episode recap identifies the battle and features Eve Best, who plays Rhaenys, and director Alan Taylor. The podcast transcript provides the companion context for the episode’s events.
What happens to Rhaenys and Meleys?
Rhaenys and Meleys are the Blacks’ response to Criston Cole’s campaign at Rook’s Rest. Aegon arrives on Sunfyre, and the dragon fight intensifies when Aemond joins on Vhagar. Rhaenys turns back toward the battle; she and Meleys ultimately die. The official podcast recap discusses that decision and the battle’s outcome.
The moment is consequential because the fight shifts from a response to Cole’s campaign into a confrontation involving the Greens’ king and the far larger Vhagar. That is the scene’s dramatic escalation, separate from what production techniques were used to depict it.

Which dragons fight at Rook’s Rest?
Three dragons are involved in the aerial fight: Meleys, ridden by Rhaenys; Sunfyre, ridden by Aegon; and Vhagar, ridden by Aemond. The official companion recap describes Aegon’s arrival and Aemond and Vhagar joining the encounter.
How the episode created the battle’s scale
No Film School’s account, based on HBO behind-the-scenes material, describes a mix of location filming, large practical set pieces, fire and explosives, stunt work, a specialized moving rig and visual effects. These methods served different purposes; the report does not claim that any one technique alone created the finished sequence.
The battlefield and location
The report identifies Bourne Wood as the filming location and says the Rook’s Rest set was the largest built for the series at that point. It reports more than 500 extras, four battering rams and sigils representing multiple houses. These are figures reported by No Film School, not independently audited production totals. The report also notes Bourne Wood’s prior use in Gladiator.
Fire, explosives and performer safety
According to the report, the production used real fire where possible and buried explosives in the ground to simulate dragon fire. It also describes stunt and safety logistics for performers being set on fire. The practical elements were combined with visual effects; the report does not specify a fuller VFX pipeline.

No Film School says Alan Taylor storyboarded the battle. It also describes a rotating dragon-riding platform called Buck 2.0, equipped with a revolving saddle and camera arms. The rig provided a physical platform for the performers and camera movement, alongside the practical battlefield elements and visual effects.
