What happened during Ilona Maher’s jive?
On the October 8, 2024, episode of Dancing with the Stars season 33, Maher and professional partner Alan Bersten performed a jive to Quiet Riot’s “Cum On Feel the Noize.” The episode’s theme was Hair Metal Night. Deseret News reported that a brief mistake disrupted Maher’s timing and that she became tearful while speaking with the judges and host Julianne Hough afterward. Deseret News

Why was she upset?
Maher said she found the dance and the week challenging. As reported by Deseret News, she explained: “This was a really tough dance for me, and this whole week’s been really tough. And you do it so well in dress rehearsal, and then you come out and you mess it up. So it’s really hard.” Her disappointment was about the gap between how she had performed in rehearsal and how she felt she did on the live show.
In an interview with Access Hollywood the following day, Maher described trying to give herself grace while learning something outside her comfort zone. She said she was not a dancer and had become sad because the performance did not feel good enough to her. Access Hollywood

How did the judges respond?
Us Weekly reported that Maher and Bersten received 26 out of 40. Coverage described judges addressing the timing mistake and the difficulty of recovering, while also offering support. Derek Hough drew a comparison to competition: “You’re a competitor. When things go wrong on the field, you sort of regroup and come back next week, and you come up strong.” Us Weekly
What did Maher say after the show?
In a separate post-show interview, Maher said she was disappointed because she knew she had more to give and could do better, but she was also glad the pair had survived elimination and could try again. Extra

She later reassured fans in a post quoted by Deseret News: “Love you all. I’m okay. Dancing is tough but I’ll keep working.”
