In the episode’s Vienna encounter, Hayley, Yasmin and Henry enter the same scene with different stakes. Kiernan Shipka says Hayley may be weighing how the moment could bring her closer to the couple—or become useful later—but she does not describe a fixed scheme. The uncertainty is central to her reading of Hayley.
What happens in the Vienna scene
During a Tender work trip to Vienna, Yasmin draws her assistant Hayley into an encounter with her husband, Henry. The scene follows flirtation between Yasmin and Hayley, but Shipka’s account focuses less on the physical setup than on what the moment means to each character. In an interview with TheWrap, she said the actors considered how the encounter made sense for their characters and how it changed them.
Shipka described three distinct emotional journeys: Yasmin exercises power, Henry reckons with the arrangement, and Hayley assesses what she is getting into. As she put it: “For all three of us it was, it was mostly about how that made sense with our characters and how that moment changed our characters, and I think it did, but very differently for all of us.”
What Hayley might be trying to gain
Shipka’s interpretation is that Hayley sees the encounter as more than a spontaneous experience. It could bring her closer to Yasmin and Henry while giving her a moment she may later be able to use in different ways. Shipka likened Hayley’s calculation to considering what kind of “chess piece” the moment could become.

That is a possibility, not a confirmed plan. Shipka does not say Hayley has decided to blackmail either of them or knows exactly how she will use what happens. Rather, Hayley may be assessing her options as the situation unfolds. In a separate interview with TVLine, Shipka described Hayley as appearing tipsy and game for fun while the event takes on a different meaning beneath that presentation. It is an actor’s reading of Hayley’s performance, not proof of a specific scheme.
Why Yasmin may not be in full control
Yasmin appears to set the terms of the encounter, and Shipka sees her as exercising power. But the arrangement does not necessarily mean Yasmin controls how Hayley understands or might later use it. Shipka suggested that Yasmin may believe she has the situation fully managed while Hayley is playing another role.

The difference between what Yasmin thinks is happening and what Hayley may be considering gives the scene its tension. Shipka has described Hayley as smart, calculated and sometimes deceptive, with different masks and few obvious allegiances early in the season. Those traits make her difficult to read; they do not settle whether she is motivated by ambition, attraction, access or some combination.
How the scene was choreographed
The scene was planned in advance. Shipka told TV Insider that the preparation gave the performers a framework while leaving room to explore the scene’s meaning on the day: “Let’s get a structure to this so that we all feel like we know what we’re doing, and then we can get there on the day and try things and figure out what the scene means as well.”

For Shipka, attending to the scene’s physical details came after working through Hayley’s intentions—or what might be concealed beneath them.

The episode puts Hayley inside a charged relationship dynamic and gives her a chance to become closer to Yasmin and Henry. Shipka’s comments make clear that Hayley may be calculating what this access could mean, even as she experiences the moment. But neither her interview comments nor the scene, as described in the coverage, establishes a definite future use for it. Whether Hayley’s apparent openness masks a concrete strategy remains unresolved.
