The U.S. rugby player has connected that message to comments she has received about looking “too masculine” and to her aim of helping younger women see a wider range of bodies represented in sport.
Her message: athletic bodies are beautiful in many forms
In a pre-Opening Ceremony message from Paris quoted by TIME on July 28, 2024, Maher urged viewers to look across sports and notice how differently athletes’ bodies can look:
“All body types matter. All body types are worthy. From the smallest gymnast to the tallest volleyball player, from a rugby player to a shot-putter, a sprinter. All body types are beautiful, can do amazing things. Truly see yourself in these athletes and know that you can do it too.”
The point is broader than celebrating one physique: athletic ability does not belong to a single body shape. Maher links representation with possibility, encouraging viewers to see themselves in athletes whose builds and sports differ from their own.

Why she talks about body positivity
Maher has described receiving comments that she looks like a man or is too masculine because she has muscles. In the same TIME interview, she said, “I get the comments of being called a man, being called too masculine, because I have muscles.” She explained that the comments bother her in part because girls hear similar judgments.
Her public comments place that criticism alongside a message for younger women: muscularity does not cancel out femininity. In a July 2023 NBC Sports interview, Maher discussed why she chose to speak about her insecurities and why body positivity matters to younger audiences. The focus is her personal experience and advocacy, not a claim that she can prevent or treat body-image difficulties.

What she said about cellulite
During the Paris 2024 Games, Maher addressed the appearance of her legs in a video covered by NBC Olympics. She said:
“I’m a literal Olympian … And that is what my legs look like. I have cellulite everywhere. It is completely normal, completely natural. It does not take away from your athletic ability or how fast or how fit you are. It’s just something that’s part of your body. We all have it.”

She used her own body as an example to challenge the assumption that visible cellulite conflicts with athletic fitness. Her statement is a body-confidence message, not medical guidance or a claim that every person has the same experience.
Confidence can go up and down
Maher has not presented body positivity as a state of constant confidence. In an ABC News interview, she described what she tells herself when confidence is low: “give yourself some grace,” and “take a breath, remind yourself you’re beautiful, it’s OK if you’re going through [this].” She also acknowledged that following that advice is not always easy.

Maher’s advocacy is part of a larger public identity as a rugby player who wants more people to pay attention to women’s rugby. NBC Olympics described her goals of raising the sport’s profile and being a voice for body positivity. In a 2025 Associated Press profile, she put the relationship between strength and appearance simply: “I can be a beast on the field and feel beautiful as well.”
