How long does LEGO Barad-dûr take to build?
Stuff writer Jack Needham reported spending 20 hours building the 5,471-piece LEGO Barad-dûr set in a first-person feature published on 1 June 2024. That is his reported time, not a manufacturer estimate or a typical duration; LEGO does not state a build-time estimate on its product page. Read Needham’s account at Stuff.
Needham describes the slow feeling of getting started before settling into the work. As he put it, “But still, after my initial concern, I open the first of 40 packs, and begin.” His experience is useful as a picture of the commitment involved, but another builder’s pace, breaks and interruptions may produce a very different total.
Why did the build feel demanding?
It is a sustained project, not a quick evening build
Needham’s account spans more than one day. He describes fatigue as the build continued, which is a reminder that a long session can become tiring even when the activity is enjoyable. Treat his schedule as one person’s experience rather than a recommended plan; splitting the model into sessions is a practical option if you prefer to stop and resume.

The work surface may matter as much as the model
Needham worried about losing use of his dinner table while the build was underway. LEGO lists the completed model as 83 cm high, 45 cm wide and 30 cm deep. Those measurements describe the finished fortress, not the amount of table space needed while sorting and assembling pieces. LEGO’s product listing also describes a four-section modular structure, detailed rooms, an opening gate operated by a brick button, and an Eye of Sauron illuminated by a Light Brick.
Interruptions and small pieces need a plan
Needham had to consider how to protect the unfinished build overnight and worried that his dog might get pieces or disturb it. That is a household-specific concern, not a special storage requirement from LEGO. If you have pets, children or a shared workspace, decide where an in-progress model can safely remain—or how you will cover or move it—before opening the packs.

What should you do if you spot an assembly mistake?
Needham reports making a mistake and choosing not to retrace the instructions, leaving a space unfinished instead. That was his decision under the circumstances, not a reliable repair method. If a section does not match the instructions, pause and check the current build against the step before adding more pieces; continuing can make it harder to identify where the error began.

LEGO identifies the product as The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr, set 10333. Its official listing specifies 5,471 pieces and 10 minifigures, and marks the set 18+. Needham’s 20-hour account gives a concrete sense of one builder’s experience with this large display set: a slow start, extended use of a shared surface, a mistake to contend with, and the need to stop and protect an unfinished model. It is best read as a useful caution about planning time and space—not a promise that your build will take the same amount of time.
