Colin Farrell’s feelings about making The Penguin were mixed: he called playing Oz Cobb an honor, but said the character’s darkness and the demanding shoot left him mentally drained. He was relieved when filming ended. Co-star Cristin Milioti, by contrast, described playing Sofia Falcone as a dream opportunity. Those comments show two different experiences; they do not establish that most of the cast enjoyed production.
Why Colin Farrell was glad filming had ended
The Penguin is an eight-episode crime drama set after The Batman, following Oz Cobb’s rise through Gotham’s criminal underworld. Farrell said he found the role creatively meaningful, but spending so much time with a cruel character took a toll on his mood. In a press-conference report, he described the arc as a descent into madness and psychopathy and said, “it was such an honor to do this.” The honor and the exhaustion were both part of his account.

Farrell summed up his state near the end of the shoot this way: “I was in a bit of a funk by the end. I was glad to be done.” His remark was about the strain of the work and prolonged exposure to the role, not a dismissal of the series or his performance.
The physical demands of becoming Oz
Farrell’s transformation involved extensive prosthetics applied each day. Casting Networks reported that he had more than 80 shooting days on the series; that figure is the outlet’s production detail, not a studio-confirmed statistic. The combination of a lengthy transformation and long production schedule provides context for why finishing could feel like a relief.

Farrell described removing the prosthetics as a way to return to himself after the workday. He also talked about seeking lighter viewing to decompress, naming Finding Nemo: “Finding Nemo’s the answer.” That was his personal way of shifting gears, not a general prescription for performers.
Cristin Milioti found Sofia exciting to play
Milioti’s account offered a contrasting experience. She called playing Sofia Falcone “the type of role that is an incredible dream to play” and recalled reading scripts and anticipating particular scenes with excitement. Her comments suggest she relished the character and the material, even as Farrell found his role draining.

What the cast comments do—and don’t—show
The available remarks support a contrast between two performers: Farrell valued the role but was relieved to finish, while Milioti was enthusiastic about playing Sofia. They do not support the headline claim that the cast “mostly” had fun as a measured consensus. The coverage provides no representative cast survey, reliable percentage, or count of how many performers enjoyed making the series.
These comments were reported around the show’s 2024 release. RadioTimes provides cast and HBO context, while Cinema Daily US reports remarks from Farrell, Milioti, and creator Lauren LeFranc. GMA News Online and CBR/IMDb News also covered Farrell’s comments and his post-shoot decompression.
