Ina Garten’s Chipotle Cheddar Crackers are a make-ahead savory snack from Go-To Dinners: mix aged Cheddar, butter, flour and ground chipotle into a dough, shape it into a log, chill, slice and bake. The official recipe makes 24 to 28 crackers. This guide follows Garten’s published method; it does not claim a personal taste test.
Where the recipe comes from
Barefoot Contessa identifies the crackers as a recipe from Ina Garten’s Go-To Dinners. The cookbook’s official index lists the recipe on page 42. The official recipe provides the ingredients and method; the cookbook index confirms its placement. Bon Appétit also identifies its version as an excerpt from the book. Bon Appétit’s recipe excerpt
Ingredients for 24 to 28 crackers
- ¼ pound (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- ½ pound aged Cheddar, grated
- 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon ground chipotle powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1½ tablespoons water
- Flaked sea salt, for finishing
Garten names Grafton two-year Cheddar and Maldon flaked sea salt as examples. They are not stated as required brands; choose an aged Cheddar and a flaked finishing salt you have available.
How to make the crackers
- Mix the dough. Using an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the butter, grated Cheddar, flour, chipotle powder and kosher salt with the water on low speed. Beat at medium speed for 30 seconds, until the mixture forms large clumps.
- Shape a log. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured board. Roll it into a log 12 inches long and 1½ inches wide, then wrap it.
- Chill. Refrigerate the wrapped log for at least one hour so it can be sliced into rounds.
- Slice and arrange. Heat the oven to 350°F. Cut the chilled log into ½-inch rounds and place them 1 inch apart on sheet pans lined with parchment. Sprinkle the tops with flaked sea salt.
- Bake and cool. Bake for 15 to 17 minutes, until golden brown. Cool the crackers on the pans or a rack, and serve at room temperature.
Making the dough ahead
The unbaked dough log can be refrigerated for several days or frozen for up to four months, according to the official recipe. The recipe does not specify a storage duration for the baked crackers.

What to know about the ingredients
Choose aged Cheddar
Aged Cheddar is the cheese specified in the recipe. The named Grafton two-year Cheddar is one example, not a brand requirement. The official instructions call for grated cheese.
Use ground chipotle powder
The recipe specifies ground chipotle powder, not a fresh chile or a prepared sauce. It gives no tested substitution or adjustment guidance, so changing the ingredient or amount would move beyond the published instructions.
