I Saw the TV Glow turns a teenager’s fixation on a strange late-night TV series into psychological horror about identity, memory, and the lure of escape. Written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, the 2024 film follows Owen and Maddy as their attachment to The Pink Opaque unsettles the line between a fictional world and the lives they are living.
What is I Saw the TV Glow about?
Teenager Owen encounters Maddy, who introduces him to The Pink Opaque, a mysterious late-night series about a supernatural world beneath the suburbs. The show becomes more than entertainment: its hold on the two characters makes them question what is real, what they remember, and whether the life around them is the only one they might inhabit.
The film does not turn that uncertainty into a puzzle with a single, tidy solution. Instead, it lets the unstable boundary between television fantasy and lived experience carry the unease. Memories of suburban life, like memories of a beloved show, can shift with time and feeling; the film leaves viewers room to sit with that instability rather than settle it.
Is I Saw the TV Glow a trans allegory?
Jane Schoenbrun has described the film as a parable of pre-transition experience. In an Associated Press interview, the writer-director connected repression to the consequences someone may fear if they stop hiding an identity: “I think repression exists because you kind of know that if you unrepress, there are going to be consequences and your life as you know it is going to no longer be your life as you know it.”

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That framing helps explain the film’s dread: becoming more fully oneself can feel as if it might undo the life one knows. In Variety, Schoenbrun also described unreality as a potent metaphor for being trans or figuring out that one is trans. The film’s alternate world and retro TV imagery can therefore work as emotional metaphors, not simply as clues to a literal explanation of the plot.
This is the director’s interpretation, not a rule that every viewer must use. The film’s ambiguity allows its story to speak about repression, identity, longing, and the fear of change without requiring one definitive reading.

What does The Pink Opaque represent?
The series gives Owen and Maddy a shared imaginative world, a way to recognize something beyond the confines of their ordinary lives. Its appeal is bound up with the possibility that the world they know may be incomplete—or that another version of life might feel more true. The film keeps that possibility charged with both hope and danger.
For Schoenbrun, television and fandom are personal points of reference. Speaking to BFI Sight and Sound, they said: “I wasn’t a child of arthouse cinema. I wasn’t a child of novels. I was a child of television, and of the video store and of the early internet.” Schoenbrun has also discussed growing up in online fan spaces for The X-Files and Buffy.

That background helps make the nostalgia more than a collection of period details. Fandom can offer recognition, connection, and a vocabulary for feelings that are hard to name. But the film also asks what happens when a formative refuge becomes difficult to recover or inhabit. An attachment can be affirming and still become consuming; nostalgia does not automatically make the past safe.
Is I Saw the TV Glow a horror movie?
Yes. The film is classified as psychological horror. Its horror grows from uncertainty and emotional pressure: the disquiet of doubting memory, feeling estranged from an everyday identity, and wondering whether a possible escape is also a threat. It is not built around resolving every ambiguity into a clear explanation.
