Walter Dornberger’s V-2 is worth reading as a senior participant’s account of Germany’s wartime rocket program—but not as a complete history. The V-2 was a ballistic weapon, and at least 10,000 concentration-camp workers died manufacturing it, according to the National Air and Space Museum. Dornberger’s memoir largely omits the underground plant and that forced labor, so read it alongside scholarship that restores those realities to the story.
What Dornberger’s V-2 covers
Dornberger was a senior military figure in the German rocket program. His book recounts the program from a military perspective, with space treated only in passing despite the space-oriented subtitle of its original German title. Historian Michael J. Neufeld describes it as a straight military account.
The V-2, also known as the A-4, was both a wartime weapon and a landmark in rocketry. The National Air and Space Museum describes it as the world’s first large-scale liquid-propellant rocket vehicle and the first modern long-range ballistic missile. Its place in the history of launch vehicles does not lessen the human cost of its manufacture or use.
Why the memoir needs a critical companion
V-2 is valuable for seeing how a senior participant presented the program, but it is retrospective and selective. Neufeld notes that Dornberger’s account barely mentions the underground plant and omits concentration-camp labor, leaving out a central part of the program’s history.

Neufeld also argues that the memoir portrayed the engineers as politically detached and attributed delays to Hitler in ways that aligned with postwar self-presentation. He quotes Dornberger: “We engineers were not used to political talk and found it difficult.” That statement is useful as evidence of the memoir’s framing, not as a neutral explanation of the engineers’ relationship to Nazi power.
Read Dornberger for his account of the program and the way it entered postwar memory; pair it with later histories that address Nazi institutions, forced labor, Mittelbau-Dora, and underground production. The available evidence supports those as important areas for comparison, but does not establish a single specific companion title as the definitive counterpart.

Which English edition to look for
English-language translations appeared in 1954, but listings describe different editions, so check the translation and printing details rather than assuming every copy is identical.

The original German book, V2: Der Schuss ins All, appeared in fall 1952 after Franz Ludwig Neher rewrote Dornberger’s manuscript, according to Neufeld. British and American English translations followed in 1954. Those publication details matter when identifying a copy or comparing page references.

Verdict: a revealing but incomplete participant account
Read V-2 if you want to understand how a senior participant narrated Germany’s rocket program and how that narrative shaped later memory. Do not rely on it alone for the program’s history: its silences about forced labor and the underground plant make later scholarship essential to a responsible account.
