A concert listed at 7 may mean doors open, the first act begins, or the advertised show time. It does not, by itself, tell you when the headliner will take the stage. Check the event’s own listing and venue updates; schedules vary and can change.
What does “starts at 7” mean?
Concert listings do not use a single universal convention. A time labeled doors is when the venue begins admitting ticket holders. Show time may indicate when performances begin, often with an opening act. Headliner time is when the main act is expected on stage. A bare “7:00” does not identify which of these applies, so look for the label and any separate times on the event page or ticket.
Ticketmaster says standard-ticket doors open an hour before the event start time, while emphasizing that door times vary by venue and artist. Treat that as a general convention, not a guarantee for a particular concert; Ticketmaster directs customers to the event listing or venue site for the published door time: Ticketmaster’s door-time guidance.
Why the headliner may come on later
If the listing gives a show time, an opener or support act may perform first. The gap before the headliner depends on the night’s lineup and schedule, so a generic estimate cannot establish a specific headliner time.

Venue examples—not a general timetable
- Haw River Ballroom: The venue says most of its shows have 7 p.m. doors and an 8 p.m. show time. With one opener, it says that act typically begins around 8 and the headliner around 9; its example for two openers puts the headliner later. These are venue-specific typical times, not a rule for other concerts. Haw River Ballroom FAQ.
- Metro Music Hall: Its doors are typically at 7 or 8 p.m., with music starting an hour after doors; set times depend on the lineup and night. Metro Music Hall FAQ.
- The Lyric Oxford: A sample schedule is 7 p.m. doors, 8 p.m. support act, and 9 p.m. headliner. The Lyric Oxford FAQ.
How to find the time for your concert
- Read the event listing and ticket closely. Look for separate labels such as doors, show time, support, and headliner rather than assuming a single time means doors or music.
- Check the venue’s event page. If the ticket gives only one time or the labels are unclear, consult the venue’s current listing or contact the venue.
- Check again on the day. Live Nation UK says advertised times appear at purchase and on the ticket unless otherwise stated, but may change; it recommends checking with the venue before setting out. Live Nation UK’s event-time guidance.
- Use official set-time updates for the headliner. SeatGeek identifies official day-of set times as the best source for a specific show, and HI-FI Indy warns that set times and opening acts can change without notice. SeatGeek’s concert timing guide and HI-FI Indy FAQ.
When should you arrive?
If you want to see the opener, plan around the earliest listed performance time and allow time to enter the venue. If you mainly want the headliner, do not use another venue’s typical schedule to decide when to arrive; look for a current venue or artist update. Arrival planning also depends on your ticket type and the venue’s entry details.
