Watch Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), John Carpenter’s tense action thriller about a police station under siege. It is not a retelling of The Rip; the connection is the pressure an outside threat puts on a group forced to depend on one another.
Why Assault on Precinct 13 is the right next watch
Netflix describes The Rip as a thriller about Miami cops whose trust frays after they find millions of dollars in a stash house. The Netflix Media Center lists its U.S. release date as January 16, 2026, and Netflix names Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Steven Yeun among its stars (Netflix; Netflix Media Center).

Carpenter’s 1976 film shifts the situation: its central pressure comes from a siege at an abandoned police station. Criterion describes it as a gritty action thriller and highlights how the threat outside intensifies the relationships inside (Criterion Collection; Criterion Collection).
What the films have in common—and what they don’t
Both stories put a group under mounting pressure and make trust and relationships part of the tension. But their premises differ: The Rip is a modern police crime thriller shaped by a discovery of cash and fraying trust; Assault on Precinct 13 is a siege-centered action thriller. The recommendation rests on that shared group-pressure dynamic, not on matching plots.

Carpenter’s film also reflects the influence of Howard Hawks’s Rio Bravo, which Criterion identifies as a key inspiration. That is context for Carpenter’s approach, rather than a claim that the films are interchangeable (Criterion Collection).
