The update that Andy Muschietti was “very excited” and that the writers’ room was active came before HBO formally announced the renewal on August 17, 2026. Season 2 will move the story to 1935 and center on the Bradley Gang Massacre; a premiere date and cast details have not been announced in the cited post-renewal coverage.
Is Welcome to Derry Season 2 renewed?
Yes. HBO announced the renewal on August 17, 2026, according to Variety’s renewal report. That announcement followed comments Muschietti made to Variety on August 3, before renewal was formal: “We’re very excited, we’re in the writers’ room right now.” His remarks described an active writers’ room, not an already confirmed season.
What is Season 2 about?
Season 2 shifts the story to 1935, during the Great Depression, and centers on the Bradley Gang Massacre. In Stephen King’s It, the massacre is one of the episodes in Derry’s history that helps explain the town’s recurring violence. Variety’s August 3 report on Muschietti’s update describes the season as returning to that period.
A darker historical backdrop
Muschietti said the series would not avoid the era’s social and cultural horrors, calling them “the very center and the heart of our story.” He described the people of Derry as “depleted, poor, tired, jobless, homeless,” and said children in the story may be orphans or runaways. Those are the creator’s descriptions of the season’s setting and characters, not a separate historical account.
#1 Best Overall
He also pointed to hope as a force holding the new group together. The story remains connected to the show’s other timelines: as Muschietti put it, “There will always be the connection, there’s a family tree that appears.”
How Season 2 differs from Season 1
The shift is both chronological and historical. Variety describes Season 1 as set in 1962 and focused on the Black Spot, while Season 2 moves back 27 years to 1935 and the Bradley Gang Massacre.
