Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake said Hogan’s black eye at WrestleMania IX came from a personal-watercraft accident before the event. The story that Randy Savage punched him is an unverified allegation; the available reporting does not independently establish the injury’s cause.
Why Hogan’s black eye stood out at WrestleMania IX
Hogan appeared with a conspicuous black eye at WrestleMania IX, where he and Beefcake faced Money Inc. in a tag-team championship match. Later that evening, Hogan defeated Yokozuna to win the WWF Championship. The injury remained a talking point even after the title change. WWE’s retrospective recounts the event and the competing explanations for the mark.

Hogan and Beefcake’s watercraft explanation
Hogan’s explanation was an accident on a jet ski or Sea-Doo shortly before WrestleMania. WWE’s 2013 retrospective says Hogan described a jet-ski accident the day before the event. In a 2025 report about the documentary WrestleMania IX: Becoming A Spectacle, Fightful quotes Hogan describing how he hit a swell, was thrown forward, and was then struck in the face by the craft as his life jacket brought him back up. Fightful’s report also quotes Beefcake saying the watercraft hit Hogan near the orbital area and fractured it.
Those are accounts from participants, not independent medical documentation. They support describing the crash as Hogan and Beefcake’s explanation, but do not independently prove how the injury happened.

Did Randy Savage punch Hogan?
The alternative story alleges that Savage punched Hogan backstage. WWE’s retrospective describes this as speculation, linking the rumor to Savage’s recent divorce from Miss Elizabeth and a belief that Hogan was responsible. WWE says Hogan attributed the injury to the jet-ski accident and calls the Savage claim false. That is WWE’s assessment, rather than a contemporaneous investigation report.
Jim Cornette later repeated a version of the punch allegation. In Wrestling Inc.’s 2022 report, Cornette connected the alleged confrontation to Elizabeth staying at Hogan’s home with Linda Hogan. This remains a later allegation, not an independently corroborated account. Fightful’s 2025 documentary report quotes Hogan denying that he fought Savage: “I never had a fight with Randy.”

The watercraft explanation is attributed to Hogan and supported by Beefcake’s reported recollection. The punch story is an enduring rumor that WWE calls speculation and Cornette later asserted. The reporting available here does not include direct testimony from Savage about this incident or independent contemporaneous proof of a fight, so the precise cause of Hogan’s black eye cannot be independently established.
For documentary viewers, Fightful’s 2025 coverage of WrestleMania IX: Becoming A Spectacle reports that the film includes Hogan and Beefcake discussing the incident. Its Peacock availability was reported at that time; current streaming availability is not established here.
