A clip from Howard Stern’s 1993 New Year’s Eve special resurfaced in June 2020, showing Stern in blackface and repeatedly using the N-word in a sketch that reports described as a parody of Ted Danson’s blackface appearance at a roast of Whoopi Goldberg. Stern later said he was lampooning Danson, acknowledged his past performance and said he would not approach it the same way now.
What the resurfaced video shows
Contemporaneous reports describe Stern wearing blackface and repeatedly using the N-word during a sketch in his 1993 New Year’s Eve special. Sherman Hemsley also appears in the sketch, according to Global News and Entertainment Tonight. The original special is not independently reviewed here, so these scene details are attributed to those reports.
Why the sketch referred to Ted Danson
The reported target was Ted Danson’s appearance in blackface at a roast of Whoopi Goldberg. The Independent and Entertainment Tonight framed Stern’s sketch as a parody of Danson’s performance. That reported satirical aim is relevant context, but it does not change what the sketch depicts: blackface and repeated racist language.
How the clip resurfaced in June 2020
Global News reported that filmmaker Tariq Nasheed posted the clip and Donald Trump Jr. retweeted it on June 12, 2020. The Independent situated the sharing in an ongoing public exchange: Stern had criticized President Donald Trump, and Trump Jr. had criticized Stern before sharing the footage. That chronology explains the political context of its renewed circulation; it does not establish why any person shared it or determine the merits of criticism of the sketch.

What Stern said about the sketch
On his SiriusXM radio show on June 15, 2020, Stern called the material “crazy,” said he owned that past shtick and explained that he had been lampooning Danson. Entertainment Tonight reported him saying: “If I had to do it all over again, would I lampoon Ted Danson, a white guy in blackface? Yeah, I was lampooning him and saying, ‘I’m going to shine a light on this,’” He added: “But would I go about it the same way now? Probably not. Not probably, I wouldn’t.”
Global News rendered another part of his remarks as: “The s–t I did was f–king crazy. I’ll be the first to admit,” followed by: “But that was my shtick. That’s what I did, and I own it.” These quotations are reported excerpts, not an independently checked transcript of the full broadcast. Stern’s account explains his stated intent and later view; it does not erase the content described in the reports.
