There is no official ranking of the most iconic Nen abilities. This editorial selection highlights ten that stand out for their distinctive concepts, tactical uses, conditions, or importance to the story. It follows the licensed English naming where possible; translated names can vary between editions and adaptations. Spoilers for major abilities and story moments follow.

What makes a Nen ability memorable?

Nen is the ability to manipulate aura, the life energy emitted by living beings. VIZ describes it as “the ability to control the life energy, or ‘aura,’ that suffuses living things” in its Heavens Arena arc explainer. The series organizes Nen into six categories: Enhancement, Emission, Transmutation, Conjuration, Manipulation, and Specialization. A user’s affinity matters: learning to use an incompatible category is difficult.

Abilities are easier to compare by asking what they do, how they work in a fight or other situation, and whether their rules or restrictions shape their effect. Nen’s basic principles include Ten (maintaining aura around the body), Zetsu (stopping its flow), Ren (amplifying it), and Hatsu (expressing it). More specialized applications include In, which conceals aura, and Gyo, which focuses aura around the eyes to detect concealed aura. The official Nippon TV series glossary describes these mechanics and the abilities below.

10 iconic Nen abilities

1. Bungee Gum — Hisoka

Hisoka transmutes his aura so it has the qualities of both gum and rubber: it sticks to surfaces, stretches, and snaps back quickly. He can detach it when he chooses. The combination makes the ability useful for movement, traps, and redirecting objects or opponents, while leaving room for improvisation rather than locking it to a single attack. Nippon TV’s glossary notes that the name refers to a chewing gum Hisoka liked as a child.

2. Texture Surprise — Hisoka

Texture Surprise lets Hisoka form his aura into a thin sheet that reproduces the surface texture of different materials, like a high-quality color copy. It is a disguise and deception tool, distinct from Bungee Gum’s physical utility. The Japanese name is ドッキリテクスチャー, also rendered in English as “Baffling Texture”; spelling varies by licensed translation. The Nippon TV glossary links its name to a once-popular candy with prank stickers.

3. Chain Jail — Kurapika

Kurapika’s middle-finger chain restrains members of the Phantom Troupe. Its restriction is central to its power: Kurapika vows to use it only against the Troupe and risks death if he breaks that vow. The series’ Nen framework treats risk and limitation as ways to strengthen an ability, so Chain Jail is not an unrestricted restraint for any opponent. Its dramatic force comes from the severe rule attached to its use.

4. Emperor Time — Kurapika

When Kurapika’s eyes turn scarlet, Emperor Time changes his Nen type from Conjuration to Specialization and increases his total aura, allowing him to use other Nen categories with 100% precision, according to Nippon TV’s glossary. The ability makes his scarlet eyes more than a visual marker: they alter how he can apply Nen. That precision does not make every ability interchangeable; the rules and functions of his individual chains remain distinct.

5. Dowsing Chain — Kurapika

The ball-tipped chain attached to Kurapika’s ring finger can help locate a target. Suspended above a map, its movement indicates the target’s location. The glossary describes this as a way to find a target, not an infallible tracker that works in every circumstance. Its appeal is its contrast with Kurapika’s more overtly combative chains: it turns a familiar weapon into a tool for investigation.

6. Jajanken — Gon

Jajanken is among the series’ recognizable combat abilities, but the official sources cited here do not provide a detailed mechanics description. Its place in this selection is editorial: it is a signature ability associated with Gon, rather than a claim that it has a measured popularity or power ranking. Consult the licensed manga or anime for its operation and variants.

7. Godspeed — Killua

Godspeed is a signature ability associated with Killua. The official sources cited here confirm it as a candidate for this list but do not establish its detailed mechanics, limits, or costs, so those specifics are not asserted here. Its inclusion reflects its prominence as one of the series’ recognizable named abilities, not a claim that it ranks above others by strength.

8. Skill Hunter — Chrollo

Skill Hunter is Chrollo’s signature ability. The available official sources cited here do not establish its operating rules or conditions in enough detail to describe them responsibly. It earns a place as a distinctive named ability associated with a major character, while its precise mechanics are best checked against the licensed manga or anime.

9. Terpsichora — Neferpitou

Terpsichora is a recognizable ability associated with Neferpitou. The official sources cited here do not provide a detailed account of its operation or limits, so this entry avoids adding mechanics beyond the confirmed association. Its inclusion reflects its role among the series’ memorable named abilities, rather than an objective ranking.

10. One Hundred Type Guanyin Bodhisattva — Isaac Netero

Netero’s signature ability is One Hundred Type Guanyin Bodhisattva. The official HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT character-page search snippet identifies the ability by name and calls it especially powerful, but the page itself was not accessible for detailed verification. No further mechanics are asserted here. The image of a named, monumental technique is enough to make it a natural part of an editorial shortlist.

How Kurapika’s chains differ

Kurapika’s chains are a useful reminder that one character can use several abilities with separate jobs. The official glossary distinguishes their functions:

Ability Chain Function
Holy Chain Thumb; cross-shaped tip Strengthens Kurapika’s own healing and can heal injuries, including broken bones.
Dowsing Chain Ring finger; ball tip Helps locate a target through the chain’s movement, including when suspended above a map.
Chain Jail Middle finger Restrains Phantom Troupe members; its use is bound by Kurapika’s vow.
Judgment Chain Blade-tipped chain Sets a rule for a target; disobedience triggers a Nen blade in the heart that kills them.

These functions should not be collapsed into a generic “chain attack”: one heals, one helps locate, one restrains under strict conditions, and one enforces a rule.

Why there is no objective top ten

The official sources establish Nen mechanics and confirm several ability names, but they do not publish a canonical top ten or measured popularity data for individual abilities. “Iconic” therefore means memorable by concept, character association, narrative function, or tactical identity—not strongest, most popular, or fan-voted. The manga began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 14 of 1998, according to Shueisha’s official series listing; that publication fact says nothing about rankings or audience preference.
