The Balfolk Boombox is a custom hurdy-gurdy expanded with Eurorack synthesis, drums and sampling. Created by Rory Scammell with Sam Palmer, it keeps the instrument’s crank-driven, continuous string sound while adding an electronic palette; it is a project, not a documented off-the-shelf model.
How the Balfolk Boombox works
A traditional hurdy-gurdy sounds when a hand crank turns a rosined wheel against the strings. The player changes notes with a row of buttons. The Balfolk Boombox retains that physical, wheel-driven approach and combines it with Eurorack modules, extending the instrument beyond its strings. Synthtopia’s April 27, 2025 overview identifies Rory Scammell and Sam Palmer as its collaborators.
The combination is the point: the crank sustains the hurdy-gurdy’s distinctive bowed-string character, while electronic hardware adds sounds and functions that a conventional instrument does not provide. Hackaday quoted Scammell describing the result as “a gig in a box.”
What sounds and functions does it add?
Hackaday’s July 13, 2025 project overview reports that the setup includes an analog synth, a drum machine and modular hardware, alongside 16 sampled instruments available at the push of a button. The reported sample library includes multiple analog hurdy-gurdies. These are described as features of Scammell and Palmer’s build, not specifications for a standard product.

That range helps explain the “Boombox” name: the instrument can bring string playing together with percussion, bass, leads and sampled sounds in one performance setup. The coverage presents the device as an instrument project and demonstrations, rather than as a commercially documented product.
What hardware is inside?
The exact bill of materials is not established in the available coverage. In an April 30, 2025 roundup, Molten Music Technology said it “Looks like he’s got a Behringer Model D in there, a drum source, effects and a sample player.” The Model D is therefore a likely identification, not a confirmed component list. The roundup does not identify exact models for every module or role.
A Sequencer.de forum discussion also mentions a Model D, but it is informal discussion and does not verify the full build. There is not enough confirmed information to give a reliable module-by-module parts list or compare exact specifications.

The sources establish the instrument as a custom project but do not confirm a current sales channel, complete kit, official parts list or repair-parts source. A forum participant wrote in April 2025 that it did not appear to be for sale at that time; that dated, informal comment does not establish whether it is available today.

A Behringer Model D may be worth investigating as a related synthesizer component, but it is not the complete Balfolk Boombox. The project’s identity comes from integrating electronic hardware with a crank-driven hurdy-gurdy, not from any single module.
