Actor and singer Hugh Sheridan paid tribute to his father, Adelaide swing singer Denis Sheridan, on 25 May 2021, the day after Denis died aged 76. Contemporary reports said Denis died in Adelaide following cancer. Hugh’s reported Instagram tribute included the words “be free papa” and W. H. Auden’s poem “Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone.”
What Hugh Sheridan shared
On Tuesday, 25 May 2021, Hugh posted a tribute to his father, according to reports published that day by 7NEWS and The West Australian. The West Australian reported the caption as “be free papa”; 7NEWS said the post appeared with Auden’s poem “Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone.”
The published accounts described Hugh’s post, but did not include an independently retrieved copy of the original social-media post.
Denis Sheridan’s death and final performance
The two contemporaneous reports said Denis died in Adelaide on Monday, 24 May 2021, aged 76, following cancer. In a pre-death comment quoted by The West Australian, Hugh said, “He’s gone into palliative care with cancer.”

Denis was an Adelaide swing singer. The West Australian reported that his final performance took place in March 2021 at an Adelaide tribute show, where Hugh joined him on stage. Denis’s cousin Neville Quist was quoted by the paper as writing: “Denis Sheridan my legendary cousin has exited the stage for the very last time.”

In a September 2024 interview, The Guardian described Denis as a jazz musician and reported that he and Hugh performed together regularly until Denis’s death. Hugh also discussed a sentimental portrait of himself singing with his late father. That later interview offers retrospective context for the relationship behind the 2021 tribute; it was not part of the original announcement.
