If you want the Elf on the Shelf tradition to end for good, tell your child plainly that the elf will not visit next year, then mark the change with a personal goodbye. A seasonal trip home—often staged on Christmas Eve—is different from retiring the tradition permanently, and your family can choose its own timing and farewell.
First, separate the seasonal goodbye from a permanent ending
Many families send the elf away around Christmas Eve, but that usually means the elf is leaving for the season, not that the tradition is over. Some families keep the elf through Christmas morning or choose another date; there is no required farewell day.
If you are ending the tradition permanently, make that part clear: the elf will not be coming back next season. A seasonal departure scene by itself may leave a child expecting the elf to return.
Tell your child in a calm, direct way
Choose a quiet moment and use words that suit your child’s age and your family’s approach to the tradition. You might say, “We’ve loved having the elf visit, but this was the last year. The elf won’t come back next Christmas. Is there a way you’d like to say goodbye?”

Acknowledge that your child may miss the tradition without trying to talk them out of that feeling. If they ask directly how the elf moved or whether the story was real, you can answer honestly in your own words. One option, discussed by Romper, is to explain that an adult moved the elf and that the tradition was intended to create seasonal magic. No single explanation is right for every family; avoid an elaborate story that could confuse or frighten your child.
Choose a goodbye that fits your family
The Elf on the Shelf’s classroom guidance suggests a farewell note, remembering favorite moments, and writing a thank-you note. Those ideas can be adapted at home. The activity can be as simple as a conversation; no special purchase is needed.

- Write a personal note. Include one real favorite memory or a kind thing your child did. Handwritten paper is enough; a printable or cardstock is optional.
- Share a memory or say thank you. Look at a photo, name a favorite elf moment, or let your child dictate a short thank-you message.
- Stage a small final moment. A breakfast reveal, packed bag, or simple clue hunt can lead to the elf’s final note. These are optional family ideas, not official rules.
Keep the activity proportionate to what your child enjoys and how much preparation you want to do. A goodbye does not need a big production to feel personal.
Pick the timing and tone that work for you
Christmas Eve is a familiar point for a seasonal departure, but families vary: some let the elf stay through Christmas morning, and others choose a different day. For a permanent retirement, you can use that familiar seasonal moment or talk about the change earlier, when there is less holiday bustle.
