How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is the 2019 animated third film in the franchise. Hiccup and Toothless set out for a hidden world after a female Light Fury appears as their village faces a major threat. The film was written and directed by Dean DeBlois and is based on Cressida Cowell’s book series.
What is The Hidden World about?
Universal Pictures At Home describes a story in which the sudden appearance of a female Light Fury coincides with a grave threat to Hiccup and Toothless’s village. They journey toward a hidden world believed to exist only in myth, with the fate of their community and their own destinies at stake. This is a spoiler-light overview; the official synopsis does not require revealing the film’s later turns.
Universal’s official film page introduces it as “a surprising tale about growing up, finding the courage to face the unknown…and how nothing can ever train you to let go.” Universal Pictures’ film page and Universal Pictures At Home provide the official descriptions.
Who made the film, and who is in the voice cast?
Dean DeBlois wrote and directed The Hidden World. Universal names Brad Lewis and Bonnie Arnold as producers. The official cast listings include Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig and Kit Harington, among other performers. Cast lists differ in scope across official pages, so this is not an exhaustive roll call.
The film is part of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon franchise. Universal describes it as based on Cressida Cowell’s books; that identifies the source material, not a claim that the film reproduces the books scene for scene.
Where can you buy The Hidden World?
Universal Pictures At Home currently lists the individual film in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD formats. The listing indicates formats offered on the official page; it does not guarantee that a particular retailer has a copy in stock or establish the specifications of every edition.
Universal’s 2019 release announcement records the original home-release schedule: digital on April 30, 2019, followed by 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand on May 21, 2019. Those are historical release dates, not evidence of current retailer availability. See the current film page and 2019 release announcement.
How do the official collections differ?
The main difference is what is included. Check the specific listing for format and edition details: the cited collection pages do not establish current prices, region coding, packaging or every edition’s bonus content.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How is the film related to Cressida Cowell’s books?
Universal identifies Cowell’s book series as the basis for the film. The film and books are distinct works, so the official description supports calling it an adaptation but not claiming that its plot follows the books scene for scene. Readers interested in the source material can explore Cowell’s series as a separate companion to the movie.
