To make life beyond hospital possible, he and engineer Teddy Hall developed a battery-powered wheelchair with a respirator, while his family adapted a van for travel. His wife, Diana, supported him, and he later advocated for people with disabilities.
How did Robin Cavendish live his life to the full despite paralysis?
He and his family adapted everyday life around the respiratory support he needed: making room to move at home, developing a wheelchair that carried a battery-powered respirator, and adapting transport for trips. Accounts of his life also describe Diana’s support and Cavendish’s advocacy for disabled people. His own account shows that independence was not a simple matter of willpower; it depended on solving practical problems of equipment, space and access.
Polio and the return home
In a 1966 first-person article, Cavendish wrote, “I got polio at the end of 1958 in Kenya.” He said he returned to England after five months and spent a year and a half in hospital before going home. He needed to keep his tracheostomy and remain permanently on a respirator. Read Cavendish’s 1966 account, “Respo Special,” reproduced by Polio Place.
The transition home brought a problem the hospital setting had not solved. Cavendish described breathing machines and suction apparatus that took up scarce space and made it difficult to move from room to room. Equipment could provide essential support yet still make ordinary movement difficult; adapting the home was part of making life outside the hospital workable.

Making mobility and travel possible
A 2017 account from End Polio reports that Cavendish worked with inventor and engineer Teddy Hall to develop a wheelchair carrying a battery-powered respirator. The account says this enabled Cavendish to leave home, and that his family later adapted a van so they could travel with the chair. These were custom adaptations described in a historical account, not evidence of a modern commercial device or a recommendation for current respiratory care. End Polio’s account of Robin Cavendish.
Historical context helps explain why mobility mattered. The NIH-hosted history describes the iron lung as enclosing a person’s chest while providing breathing support, a design that could restrict movement. It also discusses ventilator jackets used by some people with permanent respiratory paralysis to move around. That general account does not establish that Cavendish used a ventilator jacket. Diana Cavendish and disability advocacy
End Polio’s account places Diana’s support within the story of Cavendish’s life beyond hospital, including travel and advocacy for people with disabilities. That wider life is part of what “living fully” means here: not an escape from severe physical constraints, but the creation of ways to participate, travel and speak for disabled people while living with them.

Breathe, released in 2017, is a feature film inspired by Robin and Diana Cavendish’s story. The British Council lists it as a completed feature, and distributor Embankment Films presents it as a story of a couple adapting to disability. It can introduce viewers to the story, but it is an adaptation; historical details are better grounded in Cavendish’s own account and biographical sources.
